One of my favorite things about living in Bhutan is being surrounded by pristine nature and breathing in some of the freshest air on the planet. As the world’s only carbon-negative country, Bhutan offers a rare purity — from its untouched forests to its crisp mountain breeze.
The mountains are always close by, inviting you to hike and reconnect with nature any time of the year. But what truly makes Bhutan special is its deeply rooted culture — both tangible and intangible — which you begin to feel the moment you land at our international airport.
From the gho worn by men and the kira worn by women, to the majestic fortresses (dzongs) and centuries-old monasteries, every detail reflects a living tradition. The gentle sounds of temple chants and local music echo through valleys and villages, offering a sense of peace that’s hard to find elsewhere.
Bhutan is not just a place — it’s a feeling, a way of life. And that’s what draws me to it every single day.
While most travelers tend to follow the standard itineraries recommended by local experts, I encourage visitors to consider staying a little longer — because Bhutan reveals its true magic in unhurried moments.
Imagine spending your afternoon in a cozy Bhutanese café, reading a locally written book while prayer flags flutter in the breeze. Or camping in the mountains, far from the distractions of modern life, surrounded by forests and stars instead of hotel walls.
For the more adventurous, there’s mountain biking along highland trails, hiking to sacred alpine lakes tucked beneath snowcapped peaks, or even venturing into the semi-nomadic regions of Central and Eastern Bhutan — areas that are rarely touched by typical tourist routes but offer a window into a unique and timeless way of life.
Many travelers visit Bhutan for just a week, which limits their experience to the most accessible areas. But those who choose to stay longer are rewarded with deeper cultural immersion, off-the-beaten-path adventures, and a slower, more soulful connection with the Land of the Thunder Dragon.
Bhutan isn’t a destination you rush through — it’s a place to breathe, reflect, and reconnect. The more time you give it, the more it gives you back.
If you ever visit Bhutan, I highly recommend spending a few nights in a local homestay to truly connect with the heart of the country. Sharing meals, stories, and laughter with Bhutanese families offers a rare and authentic glimpse into daily life — something no hotel can replicate.
During the day, you’ll see most locals proudly dressed in our traditional attire — the gho for men and kira for women. But as dusk settles in, the streets take on a different vibe — Bhutanese youth step out in modern and Western fashion, creating a striking contrast that reflects the country’s gentle blend of tradition and modernity. It’s a cultural duality unique to Bhutan.
For a more peaceful and spiritual experience, consider spending a night in a temple. Immersing yourself in the rhythm of monastic life — waking to the sound of chants, sharing a simple meal, and observing daily rituals — offers deep insight into Bhutan’s Buddhist heritage. As a deeply Buddhist country, much of our way of life — from our architecture to our values — is shaped by these spiritual roots.
And above all, a hike in Bhutan is essential — not just for the views, but for the connection it offers. Whether it’s the iconic trail to Tiger’s Nest Monastery or a peaceful walk through pine forests and remote villages, hiking allows you to slow down, breathe deeply, and absorb the raw, unspoiled beauty of this land. In Bhutan, hiking isn’t just a physical activity — it’s a pathway to stillness, perspective, and awe.
Bhutan is not just a place to visit; it’s a place to feel, explore, and reflect — slowly and meaningfully.

Bhutan is famously known for its national dish, ema datshi — a bold and flavorful combination of chilies and cheese. It’s served in various styles, using either fresh green and red chilies or dried red ones, and it’s a true staple in every Bhutanese household. Another must-try is sikkam paa — dried pork cooked with chilies and sometimes paired with cheese or radish. It’s rich, smoky, and deeply satisfying.
Both dishes perfectly capture Bhutan’s love for spice and simplicity, and they’re an essential part of the local culinary experience. If you’re visiting Bhutan, don’t leave without tasting these two iconic favorites!
The best time to visit Bhutan is during spring (March–May) and fall (September–November) — when the skies are clear, the air is crisp, and the landscape is at its most vibrant. Spring brings blooming rhododendrons and lush greenery, while fall offers golden fields, deep blue skies, and colorful festivals across the country. Each season in Bhutan offers something special — but spring and fall capture its magic at its very best.
Summer (June–August) sees light monsoon rains, which can sometimes limit outdoor activities, though the valleys remain lush and peaceful. Winter (December–February) is cold, especially in the mountains, but ideal for those who love snow and want a quieter, off-season experience with clear skies and serene monasteries dusted in white.
