Good to know

Vietnam is a big country with a wide variety of terrain, so the best time to visit depends on where you're going. The north, which includes Hanoi and Ha Long Bay, is best from October to April. Central and southern Vietnam, which includes Ho Chi Minh City and Hoi An, is drier from November to April. February and March are typically ideal for travellers who want to explore multiple regions.
Vietnamese is the official language in Vietnam. English is widely spoken in hotels, tour operators, and restaurants in popular cities and tourist destinations such as Hanoi, Ho Chi Minh City, and Hoi An. In rural areas, you’ll find less English is spoken, so a few basic Vietnamese words and phrases go a long way and are appreciated.
British citizens can visit Vietnam without a visa for up to 45 days and you are encouraged to fill out a digital arrival card online before arrival. Your passport must be valid for at least six months beyond your arrival date and have at least one blank visa page for an entry stamp. Always verify current entry requirements with the Foreign Travel Advice page on the official GOV.UK website before you travel, as rules can change.
Vietnam's currency is the dong (VND). Cash is widely used in Vietnam, so carrying local currency is essential for your trip. Credit cards are accepted at many hotels, high-end restaurants, and shopping malls, with Visa and Mastercard the most reliable options. Cash machines are available in cities and popular tourist areas, though fees can apply when withdrawing from foreign bank accounts.
Vietnam is a long, narrow country in Southeast Asia, set on the Indochina peninsula. It shares borders with China to the north, Laos and Cambodia to the west, and faces the South China Sea to the east and the Gulf of Thailand to the southwest. Hanoi is the capital of Vietnam, while Ho Chi Minh City is the largest city.
Vietnam is generally considered a safe destination for travellers. Petty theft and scams targeting tourists can occur in popular tourist areas, so standard travel precautions apply. For the latest recommendations, check the GOV.UK foreign travel advice before you go.
