The best places to go wild swimming around the world

|

Immerse yourself in nature in more ways than one as you explore the best places for wild swimming around the world. From lakes and rivers to beaches, waterfalls, natural pools, and hot springs, there are some truly unforgettable wild swimming spots out there, perfect for a family adventure or a peaceful moment of reflection. Check out our top ten favorites, we dare you to resist the urge to dive right in.

1. Slovenia

The pristine lakes of Slovenia are perfect for open water swimming challenges, as well as more gentle wild swims amidst glorious scenery. In the Julian Alps, the icy waters are crystal clear and pure and the visibility is such that you can spot freshwater fish shimmering 3-4 feet down. Above the waterline, there’s dramatic scenery to catch your eye with forested slopes sweeping up dramatically to mountain peaks. Wild swimming is encouraged around the shores of expansive Lake Bled and there are several beaches for sunbathing and setting off from. Challenge yourself with a 2km swim across the middle of the lake or take a guided swim to Church Island (around 300m).

Lake Malawi, Malawi

2. Malawi

Taking up around a fifth of Malawi’s territory, Lake Malawi is one of the country’s defining features. The lake is blessed with clear blue waters teeming with colorful fish that make it feel like the ocean, but it’s a freshwater lake perfect for swimming and snorkeling. Cape Maclear is the best base, located on a lovely peninsula on the southern shore of the lake.

3. The Azores

The wild volcanic beauty of the Azores (Portugal) makes it a striking destination for wild swimming. There are tumbling waterfalls and river pools, crater lakes and thermal hot springs, but the ultimate wild swimming in the Azores is to be found around the coast. The sharp volcanic rocks and wild Atlantic waves might look daunting, but the coast has had some human intervention. Natural pools and more sheltered inlets have been subtly augmented with pathways, steps and ropes, allowing swimmers to hop in and out with ease. Some swim spots are completely sheltered but most allow the ebb and flow of the Atlantic to enter and recede. Waves crash on the protecting rocks and often cascade over, so it’s a real wild swimming experience. For sunny days many have flat areas for sunbathing where you can lie back and listen to the soothing sounds of the waves.

Wadi Bani Khalid, Oman

4. Oman

Deep in the crevices and valleys (wadis) of Oman you can find serene and beautiful pools perfect for a cooling dip in this sizzling country. Many are remote and tricky to get to such as Wadi Bani Awf, and you will often have these to yourself, but there are plenty that are easier to reach, like Wadi Shab and Wadi Bani Khalid, both popular but stunning, with clear turquoise pools.

5. Iceland

Iceland is an exhilarating location for wild swimming with some incredible scenery for a backdrop. Snowy landscapes and the chance to see the Northern Lights in winter, then the magical light of the Midnight Sun in summer, take things to another level. The beauty of wild swimming in Iceland is that the country’s volcanic makeup means hot springs are bubbling up all over the place. You’ll have to brave the wind chill, but once you’re in, the water temperature is toasty. There are natural hot spring pools dotted all over the country and even a warm river in the Reykjadalur Valley.

The best places to go wild swimming: Lago Nahuel Huapi

6. Argentina

Lake Nahuel Huapi is one of the most beautiful lakes near Bariloche in Argentina’s Lake District, with stunning blue water and plenty to do nearby. The water is often cold, the lake sits at an elevation of 2,300ft and is fed by glacial melt, so be sure to bring a wetsuit. Some of the best beaches for swimming include Playa Bonita, Playa Serena, and Villa Tacul.

7. Jordan

Swimming in the Dead Sea in Jordan is definitely a challenge, its extremely high salt content makes it nearly impossible to swim in the traditional sense, since humans naturally float. But for a truly unique “wild float,” the Dead Sea is unmatched. As the lowest point on Earth, it has a distinctive atmosphere, and when combined with its mineral-rich waters, it offers a rejuvenating and revitalizing experience like no other.

8. Greece

There are innumerable opportunities for diving into the deep blue sea in Greece, with its expansive mainland coast and pepper shake of gorgeous islands. Seek out your own private plunge pool on a sailing trip from island to island where you can cruise the craggy coastlines in search of the perfect deserted bay. Particular favorites have to be Crete and the sublime Falasarna Beach, or the white sand bays of lovely Lefkada.

9. Laos

About an hour from Luang Prabang in Laos by local transport, the beautiful Kuang Si Falls offer a stunning series of cascades and pools tucked away in the jungle, like a natural waterpark. The water is a milky aquamarine, and in some spots the pools are deep enough for swimming. Wooden walkways around the area provide access to great viewpoints for photos.

10. Guatemala

Semuc Champey is remote and takes some effort to reach, but it’s one of the most stunning attractions in all of Guatemala. A series of inviting turquoise pools sits atop a natural limestone bridge, surrounded by jungle-covered hills, an absolutely breathtaking sight. After hiking through the forest, the swimming is incredible, and the trail to the viewpoint offers spectacular views.

11. Mexico

Cenotes are unique to the Yucatán region in southern Mexico, beautiful underground swimming holes that were once considered sacred. Today, they’re popular with swimmers seeking out the most inviting spots for a refreshing dip in crystal-clear water filled with tiny fish. Ik Kil Cenote is known as one of the most scenic and photogenic, while Yaxbacaltun Cenote features a fun swing for jumping into the water.

12. Belize

When Hurricane Hattie tore through Caye Caulker in 1961, it split the island in two. The channel it created, now known as The Split, features calm waters and docks that provide easy access to the beautiful sea. Keep in mind that the channel is used by boats, and depending on the tide, the current can be strong, so it’s best to stay within the designated swimming areas. Belize is a hotspot for marine life, making snorkeling a popular activity here as well.

13. Colombia

Colombia boasts a Caribbean and a Pacific coast, both offering beaches galore for wild swimming and surfing. The pristine protected beaches of the Santa Marta National Park are some of the best. For something different, head inland to Colombia’s Andean region north of Bogota. Here you’ll find a land of lush forested mountains cut through with rivers and waterfalls. Over the centuries natural swimming areas have formed with smooth stones for sunbathing and deep pools for plunging into. Some of the best are around the mountain town of San Gil.

The best places to go wild swimming: El Nido

14. The Philippines

Seasoned travelers often agree that El Nido might just be the most beautiful place in the world. Towering limestone cliffs, covered in lush vegetation, rise dramatically from the crystal-clear cerulean sea, surrounding breathtaking lagoons that are perfect for swimming, snorkeling with tropical fish, or discovering hidden, deserted beaches.

15. Morocco

Take a day trip from Taghazout to the serene oasis known as Paradise Valley, nestled in the foothills of the Atlas Mountains. This stunning valley, filled with palm trees and vibrant blue pools, is perfect for a refreshing swim. Spring (March to May) is the best time to visit, as water levels are usually high enough; in summer and fall, it tends to be much drier. The hike through the valley is part of the adventure, offering amazing views of the deep, clear pools and waterfalls.
