Before heading south to Halkidiki, I'd recommend a night in Kavala to enjoy a mud bath in nearby Krinides - an interesting and unique way to unwind.

Good to know

Greece is located in southeastern Europe, bordered by Albania, North Macedonia, and Bulgaria to the north, and Turkey to the east. It sits at the southern tip of the Balkan Peninsula and includes over 6,000 islands across the Aegean and Ionian seas. Major international airports are in Athens and Thessaloniki, with seasonal direct flights from the US.
Greek is the official language, but English is widely spoken across tourist areas, major cities, and the islands. Menus, signage, and transport information are often available in both languages, so most travelers can get by easily without knowing Greek. That said, a few words of Greek are always appreciated by locals and can go a long way during your trip.
Greece uses the euro (€). Credit and debit cards are accepted in most hotels, restaurants, and shops in cities and popular island destinations. Carrying a small amount of cash is useful for shopping at local tavernas and markets, or for exploring rural areas. ATMs are widely available, though fees can apply when withdrawing from foreign bank accounts.
US citizens can visit Greece visa-free for up to 90 days within a 180-day period, as Greece is part of the Schengen Area. The US government recommends that your passport be valid for three months for international travel, though six months is recommended. You'll also need at least one blank page available for entry stamps. Always check current entry requirements before you travel, as rules can change.
Greece is generally a safe destination for travelers. Petty theft can occur in crowded tourist areas, so normal precautions apply. The US State Department currently rates Greece at Level 1: Exercise Normal Precautions. For the most up-to-date information on travel advisories and safety guidance, check the US Government Travel Advisory for Greece.
