New Zealand has an incredible outdoor lifestyle. We are so fortunate to be able to enjoy the culture of modern city life and also have access to spectacular hiking and cycle trails, beaches and water sports, as well as skiing all just a short distance away.
While self-driving is a great way to explore New Zealand, I would recommend visitors take a day off from driving and incorporate a scenic train ride, such as the TranzAlpine or the Coastal Pacific.

March and April are our late summer and early fall, and November is our late spring. During these months you will find pleasant temperatures and fewer crowds than in peak summertime. During the shoulder season months, luxury lodges offer lower rates; what’s more, if you have plans to visit Fiji as part of your New Zealand trip, you’ll find ideal temperatures there at these times of year, too.
We are an island nation surrounded by the ocean, so try some fresh seafood such as Bluff oysters and crayfish. Crays are found in abundance on the South Island’s Kaikōura coast. Fun fact: the name of this region combines the Māori words kai (to eat) and koura (crayfish), and so, a seafood chowder from there is a must!
