8-day Malta tour: Game of Thrones & more

Discover this tiny country rich in history and bathed in glorious sunshine. Malta is the perfect place to relax, tour historic sites and explore the Land of Ice and Fire. Malta and Gozo were prominent Game of Thrones filming locations - particularly in Season 1 - making the stunning islands a must-see destination for fans.

We will greet you at the airport where you will receive your welcome pack, containing all the tickets, vouchers and information you will need for your tour. We will then transfer you from the airport to the hotel by taxi.

Settle in and enjoy the rest of your day getting to know your surroundings.

Morning:

Discover the streets of Valletta with your guide on a 2-hour walking tour of this UNESCO World Heritage Site. Take in the Auberges, the former residences of the Knights, the Palace of the Grandmasters, and the Parliament building.

Throughout the tour, you will spot locations that have been used in the Game of Thrones seasons and your guide will point out others that you can go and see in the afternoon.

Afternoon:

This afternoon is yours to enjoy. Take in more scenes from the Game of Thrones series such as Fort Manoel. This carefully restored, star-shaped fortification is where one of the iconic moments in the first series was filmed; imagine Ned Stark here, the crowds gathered around... Or just relax and enjoy being on holiday in a beautiful Mediterranean city. 

Morning:

Head across the island by taxi to explore the temples of Hagar Qim and Mnajdra. these megalithic structures date from 3500 BC and 2000 BC and are UNESCO listed. Wander through these magnificent sites, learning all you could possibly want to with your audio guide. Tour lasts approximately 1h30m.

Afternoon:

This afternoon you will take a short boat journey to explore the Blue Grotto, an alluring and evocative natural wonder consisting of a series of sea caves. 

While not officially Game of Thrones filming sites, these locations are remiscent of scenes around Kings Landing and backdrops for the Dothraki camp and wedding.

Return to your hotel for the night.

Today you will be on a full-day excursion and lunch is included. Enjoy breakfast at your hotel before setting off by private transfer to discover the island of Gozo.

Gozo, Malta’s sister island, is the second largest in the Maltese archipelago. It provided the setting for the Dothraki Wedding during season one of Game of Thrones, and is typically Mediterranean and rural.

Enjoy a private scenic tour of Gozo taking in:

- the capital, Victoria, with its fortified citadel
- A cave believed to be mentioned by Homer in The Odyssy
- The salt pans on the north coast
- A deep gorge
- A lunar-like landscape with stunning views.

As you explore the island, you will re-live some of the most vivid scenes from Daenerys' coming of age.

You will return to the hotel at around 1730 in the afternoon. 

Afternoon guided tour (2.5 hours)

From the moment you enter the Mdina, this incredible walled city captures your attention with its imposing gateway. This is where Jon Snow, Catelyn and Ser Rodrik Cassel rode into King’s Landing. Further in you will find Mesquita Square, backdrop for many scenes leading up to the change in Ned Stark's fortunes.

On to Rabat, where St Dominic’s Convent is the must-see location, having featured as the Red Keep Garden. In itself a special place, it has been a site of pilgramage as it holds a miraculous statue of the Holy Virgin Mary.

Look out for Verdala palace, the official summer residence of the President of Malta. In Game of Thrones, it doubled as Illyrio’s Mansion, site of the fateful meeting between Daenerys, Viserys and Khal Drogo.

Finally, visit the Dingli cliffs for beautiful views.

Morning

A member of our team will take you to villages that have retained their authenticity. Stroll the streets, discovering traditional houses, churches and cafés and meet the villagers. You will also pass through one of two Game of Thrones filming locations. 

Mqabba itself has a unique link to Game of Thrones, through actress Shireen Baratheon whose grandfather hailed from Mqabba.

Afternoon

Enjoy some time at leisure. Explore around your hotel and perhaps try some of the local fare if you haven't yet had the chance? We recommend a traditional Maltese snack, pastizzi - delicious parcels of puff pastry filled with ricotta or mashed peas.

Take a guided tour of the Three Cities - Senglea, Vittoriosa and Cospicua

Located just outside the capital city of Valletta, the Three Cities have a fascinating history. Brigu (Vittoriosa) withstood brutal Ottoman attacks and was the headquarters of the Knights of St John. In Game of Thrones, it was no less important; Fort Saint Angelo played its part as the Red Keep Prison and the Underground Chambers, where Arya chased a cat and overheard a life-changing conversation between Illyrio and Varys; it also housed Ned Stark for a time. Don't forget the admire the wider charms of the City while here; all three Cities have an illustrious real-life history of their own and a modern charm which intertwines past and present beautifully.

Enjoy your last breakfast at your hotel before you check out. Make the most of any free time you have left before you are transferred by taxi to the airport.
