Day 2: Soak up the iconic sights of Dambulla

There's no better way to kick-start your Sri Lankan journey than by touring some of the country's most iconic attractions. In the early morning, you'll pay a visit to Sigiriya Rock Fortress, a UNESCO World Heritage Site that dates back to the 5th century. Famed for its fascinating frescoes and the panoramic vistas that a hike up to the summit affords, it offers a surreal step back in time.

In the afternoon, set out on a safari in search of elephants and other incredible wildlife. Depending on the elephants' location, you'll explore one of the following parks: Minneriya National Park, Kaudulla National Park, or Hurulu Eco Park, each home to a wonderful diversity of animals.

After a day of active pursuits, you'll return to your accommodation to relax for the rest of the evening in Dambulla.

Explore the many riches of Kandy

Day 3: Explore the many riches of Kandy

Pack your bags and leave Dambulla behind as you depart for Kandy, just over two hours' drive away. There you'll visit the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, another formidable UNESCO World Heritage Site. Housing the left canine tooth of Gautama Buddha, this landmark complex holds great significance as a main place of worship in Sri Lanka.

Spend the rest of the day at leisure, either relaxing at your accommodation or getting to know Kandy at your own pace. Take a wander through the stunning Royal Botanic Gardens or follow your nose on a spice walk, learning all about the iconic flavors that define Sri Lankan local cuisine. Overnight in Kandy.

The delights of Nuwara Eliya

Kandy - Nuwara Eliya

Day 4: The delights of Nuwara Eliya

Today, pack up and board a train from Kandy to Nuwara Eliya (subject to availability). You're in for a super-scenic experience - make yourself comfortable as the train chugs past some of the country's most spectacular landscapes, across tea estates and past waterfalls, on a journey of six to seven hours.

Arrive into Nuwara Eliya and check into your hotel. Then, step back in time and send postcards to your loved ones from one of the oldest post offices in Sri Lanka, the Nuwara Eliya Post Office. This historic gem, built in 1894, offers a unique blend of colonial charm and a delightful way to share your travel memories.

More quintessential activities await: explore tea plantations and visit a tea factory to learn about the tea-making process, then hike to Lover's Leap Waterfall and Single Tree Hill. Finally, end the day by enjoying a delightful evening high tea at the Grand Hotel.

Hike the cloud forests of Horton Plains

On this invigorating day in Sri Lanka's great outdoors, you'll venture past grasslands and biodiverse cloud forests teeming with wildlife - keep your eyes peeled for the striking Sambar deer, as well as the endemic bear monkey and a colorful array of birdlife.

Return to Nuwara Eliya and relax for the rest of the day, with the option of joining a city tour - if you have energy left to burn, it's a great way to seek out the city's top attractions and foodie hotspots with help from a local expert. Overnight in Nuwara Eliya.
