Day 7: Paraty

Paraty Historic Walking Tour
Excursion: The town of Paraty is a true homage to the beauty of Brazil, and is a balanced mix of history, culture and nature. Take a step back in time by strolling along perfectly preserved colonial streets. You'll be sandwiched between dense jungle and feathery white sands, but be sure to keep an eye on the cobbles underneath you too - they can be pretty unforgiving! It's no surprise that it was recognised as a National Historic Site 1966, Paraty’s centre is lined with rows of ornate 18th-century houses, latticed windows and colourful door frames. A unique glimpse into Brazil’s history lies around every street corner. Live music can be heard from a handful of cosy bars and much of the town is enshrined in creativity. The general hubbub of the town is slow and unimposing; it fades out to colourful boats bobbing beside the jetty and the waves of the Atlantic rolling up the shore. As you wander though the town, you’ll be shown a number of beguiling churches with fascinating historical narratives: the Church of Our Lady of the Remedies is particularly picturesque, so don’t forget your camera. No trip here is complete without a snoop around the Casa da Cultura, which exhibits splendid local artwork every week. There’s a lot to pack into this tour, so bring a comfy pair of shoes. Tour length: 1h 30min Includes: English-speaking guide Transfers not included.

Forest Forager - Wild Food Walk

Day 8: Paraty

Forest Forager - Wild Food Walk
Excursion: Explore the Atlantic Rainforest on this fascinating Wild Food Walk with leading Brazilian forager, Jorge. A passionate mushroom hunter and experienced collector of wild plants, Jorge will share with you some of his vast knowledge of amazing local plants – their scientific and popular names, their nutritional qualities and medicinal characteristics. After you meet the guides, there is a short journey by road into the rainforest covered mountains near Paraty. The wild food walk takes place on forest trails in the Atlantic Forest. They use a number of different trails to minimise our impact on the environment but on each route, in addition to walking on forest trails, you will also see the agro-forestry system of farming in action and visit waterfalls and swimming holes. After a short talk on safety and responsible foraging, Jorge will take you into the forest, identifying and collecting amazing and tasty fruits and flowers, leaves and mushrooms as you go. Jorge will help you identify edible plants and there will be plenty of wide-ranging conversation from nutrition, medicine and herbalism to botany, cookery, horticulture and history. At the end of the walk there is a chance to have a refreshing swim in the freshwater swimming holes in the forest. This is a fascinating and fun day out for anyone interested in wild food or just curious about the rainforest. Small group tour: Approx. tour length: Six hours Included: Foraging expert, local English-speaking guide, return transport by bus, salad at lunch
