We caught up with Bettina, one of our local experts based in the destination, for her top Zimbabwe travel tips and firsthand perspective of this remarkable country she calls home.

First of all, tell us a bit about yourself, the types of trips you specialize in, and those you most enjoy planning…

My name is Bettina Marchel and I am the founder of a specialist travel company creating tailor-made journeys throughout Southern Africa. Originally from Austria, I moved to South Africa in 2013 and have spent the past decade exploring the region’s incredible landscapes, wildlife areas, and cultures.

We specialize in bespoke itineraries across South Africa, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Namibia, Zambia, and Mozambique, with a strong focus on authentic experiences, conservation-minded tourism, and meaningful encounters with nature. Personally, I most enjoy planning journeys that combine exceptional safari experiences with unique cultural and scenic highlights. Zimbabwe is one of my favorite destinations because it offers exactly that balance.

What about Zimbabwe makes it stand out from other African safari destinations?

Zimbabwe has a wonderfully authentic safari atmosphere that can be difficult to find elsewhere. The country is home to some of Africa’s most experienced guides, and many visitors comment on the exceptional quality of guiding they receive. What I particularly love is the sense of wilderness. Even in renowned parks such as Hwange National Park and Mana Pools National Park, you often feel as though you have the landscape entirely to yourself. Zimbabwe is less crowded than many other safari destinations, allowing for a more intimate connection with nature.

The combination of outstanding wildlife, spectacular scenery, rich history, and warm hospitality makes Zimbabwe one of Africa‘s most rewarding destinations.

Could you recommend a few highlight experiences to add to a first-time itinerary? On the flip side, are there any hidden gems for those hoping to go off the beaten track?

For a first visit, Victoria Falls is an absolute must. The waterfall is one of the natural wonders of the world, but the surrounding area also offers fantastic activities such as sunset cruises on the Zambezi River, helicopter flights, cultural visits, and wildlife experiences. Hwange National Park is another essential stop. It is Zimbabwe’s largest national park and offers exceptional game viewing, particularly for elephant enthusiasts.

For those with a little more time, I highly recommend Mana Pools National Park. Walking safaris and canoeing along the Zambezi River create a safari experience unlike any other.

As for hidden gems, I would suggest Gonarezhou National Park in the southeast of the country. It receives far fewer visitors than Zimbabwe’s better-known parks but offers spectacular scenery, excellent wildlife viewing, and a true sense of exploration. The remote wilderness areas of northern Hwange are also incredibly rewarding for travelers seeking something different.

In your opinion, what are some of the most extraordinary wildlife sightings visitors can enjoy on a safari in Zimbabwe?

Zimbabwe is famous for its large elephant populations, particularly in Hwange National Park, where visitors can witness impressive herds gathering around waterholes during the dry season.

One of the most memorable wildlife experiences is watching wild dogs. Zimbabwe is one of the best places in Africa to see these endangered predators, and sightings can be incredibly exciting as packs move through the bush hunting cooperatively.

In Mana Pools, visitors may also encounter elephants feeding on their hind legs, stretching up into the trees — a behavior that has become iconic in the park. Lion, leopard, buffalo, hippo, crocodile, and an incredible diversity of birdlife add to the wildlife spectacle.

What essential planning tips do you have for those thinking about their first safari trip?

• My biggest piece of advice is to allow enough time. Rather than trying to visit too many destinations, spend at least three nights in each safari area to fully appreciate the experience.
• I also encourage travelers to focus less on ticking species off a list and more on immersing themselves in the overall safari experience. Some of the most memorable moments happen between wildlife sightings — watching a sunset, listening to lions calling at night, or enjoying stories around the campfire.
• Finally, work with a specialist who understands the destination. Safari planning involves many factors, including seasonality, logistics, wildlife movements, and lodge selection.

When would you say is the best time to go on safari in Zimbabwe, and why?

Zimbabwe is a year-round destination, but my personal favorite period is from July to October.

During these dry winter months, vegetation becomes thinner and animals gather around rivers and waterholes, making wildlife viewing particularly rewarding. Temperatures are generally pleasant, and the risk of rain is very low. For visitors who enjoy birdwatching, lush landscapes, and fewer visitors, the green season between November and April can also be a wonderful time to travel.

What are some of your personal favorite experiences from exploring Zimbabwe’s landscapes and wildlife?

One experience I will never forget was watching elephants cross the Zambezi River at sunset while enjoying a cruise near Victoria Falls. The colors of the sky, the reflections on the water, and the wildlife all combined into an unforgettable scene.

Another highlight was spending time in Mana Pools, where wildlife encounters often happen on foot rather than from a vehicle. Standing quietly as elephants move through the forest nearby creates a powerful connection with the natural world.
