Indonesia: a fascinating country, wonderful people and a well organised trip.

The overall experience was great and things well organised which meant that we could really relax and enjoy our time. There were a couple of issues with the accommodation. The Ibis in Makassar airport was horrendous and we had problems with our room and had to move twice in Toraja due to water flooding the room from outside and the shower flooding in another room. Some of the activities were better than others as was the standard of the guides. Sandy and Sam our driver and guide in Makassar were fabulous. Sandy is a super star, we really enjoyed his company. He took great care of us, made us laugh and was very informative. Sam our driver was reliable and a safe pair of hands throughout. The guide in Sorong met us at the airport where she told us that she had prior commitments and handed us over to a colleague who spoke very little English. He tried his best but could not answer questions or have a conversation. As this was the last part of our trip it was fine as we could manage anyway. Earlier in the tour it would perhaps have been a bigger issue. The guide in Toraja was very good and helpful. Toraja is such a wonderful place we were fascinated by the culture. The guides in Makassar helped us to understand customs and traditions. The people we met with and through them were just lovely and so welcoming. We have travelled all over the world and have never met such honest and open people.

What was good about our local partner based in Indonesia?

The fact that it is locally based so is authentic and offers a chance to really experience a taste of the country and its culture.

What could our local partner based in Indonesia improve on?

Some activities and the standard of some accommodation. The IBIS in Makassar was an horrendous experience. The cooking on the first day could have been made more of. Malina and the Aston are the high spots in terms of accommodation.

What did you think about the guides or drivers on your trip?

Sandy and Sam just great. We loved them.

What advice would you give to other travellers planning a trip to Indonesia?

Rethink the finer points of some of the activities. Quality very variable. Ditch the IBIS. The smell in the room of chemicals and drains unbearable. Just awful. River rafting great fun. Good guide. Great time. Toraja fabulous make more of that part.

What was the most memorable part of your trip?

Toraja and Raja Ampat and the wonderful people. Sandy and Sam.
