Really fantastic interesting trip to Indonesia

We had researched quite a bit what we wanted to do and where we wanted to go in Flores. We were interested in experiencing local culture, walking and wildlife, as well as snorkelling. We gave TravelLocal's partner this information and they put the trip together for us. They consulted with us as they were booking it and responded promptly to our queries. The information they sent in advance was useful and comprehensive - and we appreciated getting a map and a book about Flores culture which were not available from the UK. We had one driver for the whole trip - who was delightful, spoke good English, and had useful experience of where we went. He adjusted the schedule slightly as we travelled and made sure it all fitted together. The guides who accompanied us for some visits to villages and for walks were almost all helpful and informative. One was less so (to Tutubadha) - and her English was less good. Our guide to Wae Rebo was particularly interesting and ensured that we got as much as possible from our visit there. We spent two nights and three days on a boat visiting the Komodo national park. This was great - we saw Komodo dragons, flying foxes, manta rays and many more wonderful things. Facilities on the boat were fairly basic, but we were comfortable enough, the food was the best we had in Flores - and the snorkelling was fantastic. A very minor hiccup was when we arrived at Labuan Bajo it wasn't immediately straightforward to organise snorkel hire. After unsuccessfully trying a few places in the town our driver contacted someone he knew who brought a selection of snorkels and fins to our hotel that evening. She brought good quality equipment and her price was very reasonable. It would have been better if this had been organised in advance. Other than that it all worked perfectly.

What was good about our local partner based in Indonesia?

They put together an itinerary for us that matched what we had requested They kept us informed during the planning process, and when I wanted to adjust some details on our itinerary this was done easily. The information we were sent was clear and useful

What did you think about the guides or drivers on your trip?

Julius (our driver from Matus) was lovely - he spoke very good English (we had been told he would not speak English) as well as being a good driver. He made sure that everything was coordinated. Our guide to Tutubadha spoke limited English and wasn't very able to answer our questions, but the other guides were helpful and pleasant. In particular Martin - who walked with us to Wae Rebo and owns Wae Rebo lodge - was delightful and very interesting. It would have saved a bit of stress if the snorkel hire had been arranged before we got to Labuan Bajo.

What advice would you give to other travellers planning a trip to Indonesia?

Staying at Ankermi Happy Dive (which we organised before the trip) was a lovely place to start the trip from. Check the weather forecast before getting up for Kelimutu lakes at dawn. We got up at 4am but it was cloudy and had been raining heavily, so after consultation with our driver went back to bed and then went up the mountain after breakfast which worked fine. We would have seen nothing if we had gone up for sunrise. If interested in ikat weaving (as we are) then it is worth visiting Watublapi (near Maumere) and Bou Sama Sama (near Ende). Visiting the Ngada villages Bena, Tolulela and Gurusina was great, as was our trip to Belaraghi. If we had realised it was possible it might have been good to walk from Bajawa to Belaraghi and spend a night there - but we did not know this was possible till too late. Tutubadha was less rewarding - we did not see any dancing as there was a building ceremony going on in the village so dancing was 'not allowed'. Wae Rebo was definitely worth visiting - although the road there is terrible - and may become impassable after the rainy season if it is not repaired. Our boat trip from Labuan Bajo was very good - but facilities on the boat were pretty basic. It was good to spend our last night in a proper bed with a good bathroom! But the food on the boat was the best we had in Flores.

What was the most memorable part of your trip?

It was all memorable - impossible to compare so many different experiences.
