Unmissable Luang Prabang!

Freedom to build your own trip, as we were going to Laos and Hong Kong (and the 3rd person in my group also went onto Australia) so having the flexibility to book our own flights around our own dates was crucial. Choosing our own activities and being able to arrive the day before the tour started was well worth it. Easy to book and pay on the website and communicate with TravelLocal. Would love to use Travel Local again if they are going to a destination on my wish list.

What was good about our local partner based in Laos?

Quick replies to emails, good guides and vehicles including water whilst out and about.

What could our local partner based in Laos improve on?

All of the guides should attend all of the activities on offer so they are aware of how long they last, what time they will finish. This will give them a better understanding of what they are offering. At times, we did struggle to understand the guides, they knew the English words but it is the pronunciation that needs work.

What did you think about the guides or drivers on your trip?

Drivers were very good. Constructive feedback on the 2 guides allocated to my party. Our first guide was a very hard working young man but we did feel he was a bit inexperienced as follows: - he should remind his clients the day before if they need to bring insect repellent as we all got bitten at the Botanical Gardens. - It would have bee good if he reminded us to wear a cardigan or jacket for the boat ride to the Pak Ou Caves, he only told us on the day, it will save him time. - On the 20 Feb, we had a full day but as I wasn’t aware of the distances between each stop, I did feel that the day could have been arranged better to take account of time. We were collected at 10am and had an hour’s drive to the Kuang Si waterfalls. It would have been better to have had an earlier pick up so that we could have seen the falls and butterfly park before lunch. Then lunch followed by the buffalo farm getting back to our hotel with at least 45mins spare in order to freshen up. However, the day ran late, and my husband and I had to miss the cooking class as we were desperate for a shower after a very hot day. This should have been possible as having our own guide and driver should have given us more flexibility. - With regard to our guide in Vientiane guide, he was excellent but he did make us feel very uneasy about walking at night where our hotel was located. I understood him to mean that as it was dark and there was limited street lighting, it was very easy to get lost and as a precaution, we should use a Tuk Tuk but my husband and friend took his comments to mean that it wasn’t safe to walk out in the dark. I think his meaning got lost in translation. Please take this as constructive feedback, we do not want either guide to face any trouble but wanted to pass this on.

What advice would you give to other travellers planning a trip to Laos?

Definitely go with the hotels recommended as I had chosen a different one for Vientiane which turned out to be a mistake. All of the activities were very good, also opt to try the Laos food as all of the restaurants were excellent.

What was the most memorable part of your trip?

Luang Prabang which we all loved! This is the highlight of Laos from the hotel chosen to the activities we went on.
