Memorable Trip

My holiday in Cambodia was interesting and memorable. I rate the hotels as exceptional, my experience dealing with Heng, the sales manager at the local company exceptional, and my experience with the guides between average to very good. I spent 11 days in Cambodia and drove through the country which gave me the opportunity to see very closely how people live, their culture, mannerism, food, infrastructure and social norms. The best part of my holiday was Siem Reap and the 3 days of visiting their historical temples/monuments.

What was good about our local partner based in Cambodia?

The experience of booking through them and the flexibility they provided to ensure the holiday I wanted was custom built for me. Heng was very patient and answering all my questions and accommodated my requests. The welcome dinner and lunch during Angkor Wat visit day was exceptional and very much appreciated.

What could our local partner based in Cambodia improve on?

More details in the itinerary and indicate clearly how many hours the guide will be dedicated during the day. Also make recommendations about having an open ticket to fly into Phnom Penh/ fly out of Siem Reap or vs versa. Set the expectation more clearly up front and add detailed notes in the itinerary about what the guides will or will not be willing to do. I was caught by surprise as my expectation was that the guide will stay with me the full day and take me around sites. This was also confirmed by the local company in the message section during the planning stage, however this was not the guide's understanding.

What did you think about the guides or drivers on your trip?

Borath - guide in Pnom Pehn did not meet expectations and was not interested. Upon calling Heng, he went out of his way to ensure I get a very good guide and made changes to the plans. The new guide, Saret was exceptional. In Seim Reap I had Vuthorng, he was good. He tried his best. The drivers, Dara and Bunthol were excellent.

What advice would you give to other travellers planning a trip to Cambodia?

I would suggest to fly directly to Seim Reap and stay for 4 nights - 3 days is required to cover all the temples, and 1 day could be optional to see the local markets. I highly recommend the Hillocks Hotel & Spa. If you want to see Pnom Penh, then 1 day is sufficient. Half day will be spent seeing palace and areas, the other half day could be spent seeing the Russian Market. If staying in Pnom Penh, the hotel La Rose Suites is highly recommended. This hotel was my best experience - everything about it is exceptional. For the North American traveller, I would not recommend Bou Sraa and area as we have enough of national parks here and the Niagara Falls, and whale/dolphin watching opportunities. The experience staying in Rajabori Villa was amazing, however the food was not good. For those who want to travel through the country, be aware that food choices are limited at some areas of Mondulkiri/ Kratie. Its very local and the washrooms during the journey are very basic.

What was the most memorable part of your trip?

Ta Phrom temple, Angkor Thom and Angkor Wat temple. Shopping at Russian Market. The lunch at Sala Kdei.
