Excellent, well planned itinerary and online support

We packed so much into this trip and this could not have been achieved without the well planned itinerary and the driver. We were able to plan this with Viraj so that we included our 'must dos' with his expertise on the island. The highlights were the ancient cities, Habarena culture and nature trip by small jeep, the Sigiriya rock fortress., rural village walk in the Knuckles mountains, scenic train journey from Kandy to Nanuoya, 2 days hiking in Horton plains national park. The accommodation was very varied a totally enjoyable especially the Other Corner, the Ficus Canopy treehouse, Kalus Hideaway (sublime!), Yala Adventure camp and the superb room in Thabropan Beach House at Unawatuna.

What was good about our local partner based in Sri Lanka?

We packed so much into this trip and this could not have been achieved without the well planned itinerary and the driver. We were able to plan this with Viraj so that we included our 'must dos' with his expertise on the island. We liked the flexibility of being able to email back and forth with ideas until we got to the itinerary we wanted .

What could our local partner based in Sri Lanka improve on?

maybe more selective on the number of game drives. We did 3 which we thought was one too many even though we did enjoy them. There are too many jeeps piling into the parks which is just not pleasant for us and I think even more stressful for the big animals. No animals are going to appear with piles of noisy jeeps spewing out exhaust fumes.

What did you think about the guides or drivers on your trip?

Great driver, very nice chap. Always on time and with a smile. However we thought his command of English was limited and we found it a challenge to communicate. We could not work out if he had understood us and it did lead to some misunderstandings. Rizan who led the hike in the Horton Plains was a very sociable person and knowledgeable about the wildlife as well as the route (no way we could have done this ourselves- we would have got lost). Danu who was the guide in the Knuckles was colourful and very, very knowledgeable about the culture and the wildlife as well as the area. He had an excellent command of English and we could engage in in-depth conversation about many issues. The driver of the jeep on the culture trip was again knowledgeable about the birds in the area, great driver and we really enjoyed this section of the trip. No other vehicles except ours... so we saw animals and birds!

What advice would you give to other travellers planning a trip to Sri Lanka?

The ancient cities, Habarena culture and nature trip by small jeep, the Sigiriya rock fortress, rural village walk in the Knuckles mountains, scenic train journey from Kandy to Nanuoya, 2 days hiking in Horton plains national park. The accommodation we enjoyed the most - the Other Corner, the Ficus Canopy treehouse, Kalus Hideaway (sublime!), Yala Adventure camp and the superb room in Thabropan Beach House at Unawatuna. Food - we loved the SL Curries. I would advise anyone to think carefully about the experience they want from the safaris before they book them given the large number of tourists doing this and the potential impact on the wildlife.

What was the most memorable part of your trip?

The lady at the Ficus Tree House showing me how to make Hoppers and Pittus. They were a lovely couple who made us really welcome and were very generous. Anuradhapura, the Kandy train ride, hiking in the Horton Plains, cultural jeep drive at habarena, the Sigiriya rock fortress, the accommodation (the Other Corner, the Ficus Canopy treehouse, Kalus Hideaway (sublime!), Yala Adventure camp and the superb room in Thabropan Beach House at Unawatuna). Birds!! The SL food.
