Spotlight Q&A: local expert tips for exploring Jordan

|

Relics of bygone civilizations and the stark beauty of desert landscapes are plentiful in Jordan, where a true sense of biblical history and traditional customs mingle with contemporary culture. The kaleidoscopic natural scenery is a major draw, from the russet cliffs of Wadi Rum to the white salt deposits of the Dead Sea. The rosy jewel in Jordan’s crown is undoubtedly Petra, the ancient Nabatean capital of astonishing grace, hewn from the rippled rock so long ago yet still possessing a haunting and unmatched beauty. If these dreamy scenes appeal to you and you’re thinking of traveling to Jordan, our local expert Dana is on hand with plenty of travel tips and advice: read her personal highlights here, and get in touch to start planning the trip of your dreams…

What do you enjoy most about living in Jordan?

My favorite thing about living in Jordan is the incredible sense of community and hospitality. No matter where you go, people are genuinely warm, welcoming, and ready to share their stories, food, or a cup of tea. It creates a feeling of belonging and connection that makes everyday life special.

Beyond that, I love how easy it is to escape into nature — whether it’s the peaceful deserts of Wadi Rum, the green hills of Ajloun, or the tranquil Dead Sea. Having such stunning landscapes just a short drive away means I can always find a moment of calm and inspiration whenever I need it.

Living here feels like being part of a rich tapestry of history, culture, and kindness — and that’s truly unique.

What advice would you offer those traveling to Jordan on vacation?

If you’re visiting Jordan, my best advice is: take time to slow down and connect with the people. Sharing tea and conversation is a big part of our culture — and often, those quiet, genuine moments with locals become the most special memories of all. Jordan is full of beauty, but it’s the hospitality that stays with you.

What are three highlights anyone traveling to Jordan for the first time must experience?

Petra: it’s about more than just the Treasury

Yes, Petra is world-famous, but it’s not just about that one iconic photo in front of the Treasury. What makes Petra truly special is the journey through it — walking the Siq at sunrise, feeling the cool shade turn into soft golden light, then exploring beyond the main sites. Climb up to the Monastery or take the less-traveled back trails for sweeping views and peaceful moments. You’ll feel like you’re discovering an ancient world piece by piece — and it’s unforgettable.

Wadi Rum: a silence that speaks volumes

Often called the Valley of the Moon, Wadi Rum is not just stunning — it’s humbling. The vast red desert, towering rock formations, and surreal sunsets create a kind of stillness that’s hard to describe. Spending a night under the stars in a Bedouin camp, sharing stories by the fire, and waking up to total silence… it’s a deep kind of peace that stays with you long after you leave.

The people and their hospitality

This one isn’t a place, but it’s the heart of every experience in Jordan. Whether you’re invited for tea in a remote village or chatting with a shop owner in Amman, the warmth of Jordanian hospitality is genuine and generous. Travelers often say they came for the sites, but they remember the people. And that’s something truly special.

And if you could only recommend one thing, what would it be?

If you’re visiting Jordan, one thing I highly recommend is to wake up early and experience Petra at sunrise — long before the crowds arrive. Everyone talks about Petra, of course, but few people actually go in when the gates first open around 6am.

The silence, the golden light on the sandstone, and the peaceful walk through the Siq all the way to the Treasury… it feels like you’ve gone back in time. You can actually hear your footsteps echoing, and sometimes you’ll see a local shepherd passing by with his goats — it’s magical in a way that gets lost later in the day when it’s full of tourists.

Do you have any tips for foodies?

If you visit Jordan, you must try mansaf — it’s our national dish and truly a taste of Jordanian hospitality. Mansaf is a flavorful lamb stew cooked in a rich, tangy yogurt sauce called jameed, served over a bed of fragrant rice and topped with toasted almonds and pine nuts. It’s traditionally eaten with your hands, shared with family and friends, making every meal feel like a celebration.

Jordan is also known for mezze — a spread of small dishes like hummus, baba ganoush, falafel, and fresh salads bursting with herbs and lemon. These dishes are fresh, vibrant, and perfect for sharing.

For something sweet, don’t miss knafeh, a warm dessert made with shredded pastry, layered with sweet cheese, soaked in rosewater syrup, and topped with crushed pistachios. It’s the perfect way to end any meal.

Food in Jordan isn’t just about flavors — it’s about community, tradition, and welcoming guests. Every dish tells a story.

When’s the best time to visit Jordan, in your experience?

The best time to visit Jordan is during spring (March to May) or autumn (September to November). The weather is perfect — warm but not too hot — and the landscapes are at their best. In spring, you’ll even find green hills and wildflowers in places like the north and Dana Biosphere Reserve, which surprises many people who imagine Jordan as only desert.

If you want to avoid the crowds at Petra and Wadi Rum, late November to early December is a great time. It’s cooler, but still very manageable — and much quieter. You’ll get more peaceful experiences at the major sites without sacrificing the beauty.
