Top Tips for Trips to Angkor

Angkor is undoubtedly one of Asia’s most recognisable sites, but also one of Asia’s busiest – receiving over two million visitors a year. Despite this, it’s relatively straightforward to escape the crowds and have a unique experience of the temples. Here we give our top tips for making the most of your time at Angkor.

1. Give yourself enough time. We would suggest three days to explore beyond the ‘big ticket’ temples; the less time you spend there the harder it is to escape the crowds.

2. Don’t just visit the ones you’ve heard of. Angkor Wat, Ta Prohm, Bayon are the most famous ones – how about Preah Khan or the Roulos group? These are as spectacular, and easily visited – it’s just that they’re not a favourite with tour groups.

3. Come back at a different time of day. In the morning and afternoon the Bayon is teeming with visitors, but come back at sunset and they’ll likely only be a handful of people – and it’s incredibly atmospheric.

4. Consider a temple safari. It’s thought that Angkor was part of the largest pre-industrial city in the world, covering 390 square miles. It is therefore possible to really get off the beaten track and discover temples deep in the jungle on a temple safari.
