What’s your favorite thing about living in New Zealand?

New Zealand has an incredible outdoor lifestyle. We are so fortunate to be able to enjoy the culture of modern city life and also have access to spectacular hiking and cycle trails, beaches and water sports, as well as skiing all just a short distance away.

What is one thing you would recommend someone visiting your country should do?

While self-driving is a great way to explore New Zealand, I would recommend visitors take a day off from driving and incorporate a scenic train ride, such as the TranzAlpine or the Coastal Pacific.

What’s one piece of advice you would give someone visiting your country?

Meet the locals, we are very friendly and always willing to give travel advice and tips! You can find us at the local pub or in line at the fish and chip shop.

What are your country’s top three highlights?

  • An overnight cruise on Milford or Doubtful Sound: These iconic fjords are best seen on an overnight excursion, giving you time to explore all of the incredible scenery as well as enjoy the peace of the fjords first thing in the morning.
  • A scenic flight, either over the islands of the Hauraki Gulf near Auckland, the Rotorua volcanic region, or the southern mountains and glaciers. The views from above all of these sites are well worth experiencing by air.
  • Queenstown: This little town has it all – epic scenery of lakes and mountains, and a great range of outdoor activities paired with wonderful hotels, restaurants and wineries.

When is the best time to visit New Zealand?

March and April are our late summer and early fall, and November is our late spring. During these months you will find pleasant temperatures and fewer crowds than in peak summertime. During the shoulder season months, luxury lodges offer lower rates; what’s more, if you have plans to visit Fiji as part of your New Zealand trip, you’ll find ideal temperatures there at these times of year, too.

What food should everyone try on their first New Zealand trip?

We are an island nation surrounded by the ocean, so try some fresh seafood such as Bluff oysters and crayfish. Crays are found in abundance on the South Island’s Kaikōura coast. Fun fact: the name of this region combines the Māori words kai (to eat) and koura (crayfish), and so, a seafood chowder from there is a must!
