Getting to know Bratislava: Slovakia’s charming capital

The Old Town and Bratislava Castle

Between forested hills and the Danube River, Bratislava’s red-tiled roofs cascade down gentle slopes to the river banks. Bridges link the different neighborhoods while castles take the high ground. Strategically placed on the river, Bratislava has been a settlement for thousands of years, with much of the beautiful Old Town dating back to the 14th century.

Bratislava Castle is one of the top Slovakia landmarks, and it has been through many incarnations over the centuries. The present-day building was restored in the 20th century after a fire, and is now a complex of museums charting the history of the region. There is a busy calendar of festivals and events always worth investigating.

Danube River experiences

Slovakia may be landlocked, but the beach comes to Bratislava in summer with imported sand lining the balmy banks of the Danube. Deck chairs, beach volleyball, paddle boards and al fresco bars take over, and there is a festive atmosphere as the city hits the beach. Of all the things to do in Slovakia, Bratislava beach days may be one of the more surprising.

Exploring more castles of Slovakia

Ruled by myriad mighty monarchs, the regions of Slovakia have changed hands and borders innumerable times over the centuries. This has resulted in a wealth of castles, with some 180 fortifications dotted across hills and mountains.

Bojnice Castle: the fairy-tale castle of spirits

Bojnice Castle is one of the stars of the show, with its turquoise towers and honeyed stonework rising out of a wooded valley. Originally a wooden castle, it was rebuilt in stone during the 13th century and is now one of the top Slovakia tourist attractions. Many additions and adaptations were made over the centuries in keeping with the architectural fashions of the moment. Today, its storied walls enclose courtyard gardens, rich interiors, and sumptuous artworks.

Orava Castle: Dracula’s filming location

Further north, evocative Orava Castle was used as a filming location for the 1922 Nosferatu movie, as well as Netflix’s 2020 Dracula series. Constructed on a high rock between the 13th and 17th centuries, Orava is set in the midst of steep wooded mountains. At certain times of the year, the castle appears to float above the trails of mist that linger in the cool valley. It’s one of the most magical places to visit in Slovakia, and it doesn’t take much of a leap to imagine that ominous black cloak, the bloodshot eyes and bared teeth…

High Tatras Mountains: Slovakia’s alpine playground

As high as the Alps and monumental in beauty as well as stature, the High Tatras are Slovakia’s glittering crown. Forming a natural border with Poland, the peaks here are packed into a small area, ensuring that the scenery packs a punch at every turn.

Hiking here is one of the most rewarding things to do in Slovakia. Clearly marked and blissfully quiet trails meander around glinting lakes, through Alpine meadows and up to high passes. Lynx, wild boar and goat-antelope roam the forests, and mountain hamlets welcome hungry hikers to recharge. This is one of the most beautiful places in Slovakia for getting away from it all.

The highest peak is Gerlach, standing at a lofty 2,654m, but summiting this giant is only for the experts. Taking it down just a notch, Lomnický, at 2,634m, is accessible via cable car, providing soaring views without the sweat. During winter, the High Tatras become a snowy realm, summoning snow sports enthusiasts for downhill skiing and winter hiking.

Slovak Paradise National Park: adventure and gorges

Indiana Jones-style adventurers will revel in the wild places of Slovak Paradise National Park. Rope bridges, wooden ladders, and even creepers are used to negotiate steep ravines, rocky paths and river crossings. Located in the far east of the country, this limestone wonderland is a maze of narrow river canyons and caves and is one of the best places in Slovakia for adventure hiking.

Caves of Slovakia: from Demänovská to Domica Cave

In a landscape of mountains and limestone ravines, caves form an important part of Slovakia’s geographical character. Most caverns are inaccessible, but those that are open to the public have become some of the top Slovakia attractions. Demänovská in the Low Tatras is an underground sculpture park of stalactites, stalagmites and inky lakes. One of the largest caverns in Slovakia, Domica Cave in the Slovak Karst National Park, is another beauty, and fun to tour by boat.

The Small Carpathian wine region: vineyard tours and tastings

The Small Carpathians are the best place to visit in Slovakia for wine enthusiasts. Stretching northwards from Bratislava, there’s an established wine route winding through the undulating foothills of the Carpathian Mountains. Historic towns dot the route and vineyards open their doors for dining, tours and tastings.

Cultural landscapes to dive into

Košice: the cultural heart of eastern Slovakia

Košice is one of the best cities to visit in Slovakia for history and culture. Awarded the title of European City of Culture (2013), it has a strong contemporary art scene alongside a venerable history. The Old Town is up there with Europe’s finest, centered around a grand square with a troupe of Gothic, medieval and Baroque churches and townhouses. The grand St Elizabeth Cathedral stands out with its towers and glittering stained glass windows.

For a more contemporary cultural experience, venture away from the center into the grittier Socialist-era neighborhoods on its doorstep. Here you can tour Košice’s celebrated street art creations, bringing life and color to Brutalist concrete canvases. You’ll be thirsty after all that walking, so head to the oldest bar in town for a locally brewed beer. The Hostinec Brewery has been sating thirsts continuously since 1542!

Banská Štiavnica: a UNESCO mining town

Right at the heart of Slovakia, Banská Štiavnica was once an important mining center, rich in gold and silver. Built in the wide bowl of a large caldera, this UNESCO-listed medieval town is surrounded by densely wooded hills and has steep cobbled streets and near-perfectly preserved architecture. It’s a wonderful, less-visited town to consider for your vacation in Slovakia.

Piešťany: a historic thermal spa town

When visiting Slovakia, luxuriating in one of its famous spa towns is a must. Pretty Piešťany, with its Art Nouveau aesthetic, makes a sterling choice. With grand hotels offering excellent spa packages at bargain prices, this is your chance to indulge in mineral soaks and mud masks amidst salubrious surroundings.

Čičmany: the painted village

Amongst the mountains of northern Slovakia, the traditional hamlet of Čičmany is known as a hub for folk architecture. Its traditional wooden houses are painted with stylized white patterns resembling lace or cut-out paper garlands. It’s a tranquil place with a few eateries and is surrounded by glorious Slovakian scenery.
