The Heart Of Islamic Delhi – The Mausoleum Of Nizamuddin Auliya

Nizamuddin Auliya was a famous 13th century Sufi saint, whose mausoleum (dargah) is visited by thousands of Muslims each week. A visit here is a journey to the heart of Islamic Delhi. Though you may see a few other tourists, you will be far outnumbered by the jostling throng of locals.

The mausoleum is approached through winding alleys lined with stalls selling religious books and flowers for offering to the saint. As you near, you’re obliged to take your shoes and socks off and approach the shrine barefoot. Strikingly lit, devotees mill about, chatting, before entering the shrine to make their offering. At certain times (connected with the lunar calendar), Sufi musicians strike up with devotional music, and whirling dervishes spring into action, making for an unforgettable scene.

After exiting the shrine complex, be sure to head to one of the many nearby street food stalls, plying succulent kebabs and a myriad of other tasty snacks.
