Ask any kind of traveler which destination tops their bucket list, and Japan often features – for good reason. Whether you’re eager to explore its deep-rooted traditions, the modern thrills of its megacities, breathtaking nature trails or everything in-between, it always has something unique and individual to offer. We spend a moment chatting with Saphia, our locally-based expert, to find out her top Japan travel tips and experiences – from must-try onsen bathing high in the mountains, to tasting the savory okonomiyaki pancakes of Osaka and Hiroshima.

What’s your favorite thing about living in Japan?

One of my favorite things about living in Japan, particularly Tokyo, is the seamless blend of tradition and innovation. From centuries-old temples nestled among towering skyscrapers to the contrast of ancient rituals with cutting-edge technology, Japan offers a unique tapestry of culture and progress. This harmonious coexistence creates an environment where you can experience the rich heritage of the past while eagerly embracing the advancements of the future.

What is one thing you would recommend someone visiting Japan should do?

If you’re visiting Japan, one must-do experience is soaking in an onsen, or hot spring. Whether nestled in the mountains or in the heart of the city, these tranquil oases offer a chance to relax and rejuvenate in mineral-rich waters while immersing yourself in Japanese culture. It’s a serene escape from the bustling streets and a perfect way to unwind after exploring the wonders of Japan.

One important piece of advice for visitors to Japan is to familiarize themselves with basic Japanese etiquette, such as bowing, removing shoes before entering homes or certain establishments, and using chopsticks properly. Respecting local customs and traditions goes a long way in ensuring a positive and enriching experience while exploring the country.

What would you say are Japan’s top three highlights?

For me, Japan’s top three highlights are:

  • Its iconic cherry blossoms (sakura), which paint the country in hues of pink during spring.
  • The majestic Mount Fuji, an emblem of Japan’s natural beauty and spirituality.
  • The vibrant city of Kyoto, renowned for its stunning temples, traditional tea houses, and serene gardens, offering a glimpse into Japan’s rich cultural heritage.

When’s the best time to visit Japan?

The best time to visit Japan depends on your preferences and what you want to experience. Spring is ideal for cherry blossom viewing and mild weather. Summer offers vibrant festivals and warm temperatures. Fall showcases stunning foliage, especially in Kyoto and Nikko. Winter is perfect for soaking in hot springs while admiring snow-capped landscapes. Ultimately, it’s about choosing the season that aligns with your interests and desired activities.

Japanese food is as popular as ever – what would you suggest every traveler should taste while there?

Although it’s not very well-known internationally, I recommend okonomiyaki. This savory pancake is a beloved comfort food, especially in Osaka and Hiroshima.
