What’s your favorite thing about living in Australia?

I moved to Australia 10 years ago from Germany, and this country has truly captured my heart. It’s the most beautiful place I’ve ever been to—and I’ve traveled a lot! The sunshine, warm weather, and breathtaking landscapes, from endless beaches to the vast Outback, create a sense of freedom that’s hard to find elsewhere.

Life here is more relaxed, with a laid-back, ‘no worries’ attitude that I love. And then there’s the wildlife—kangaroos, koalas, colorful birds, and wallabies—so many incredible animals that you can only experience in Australia!

What is one thing you would recommend someone visiting your country should do?

I highly recommend experiencing the Great Barrier Reef—but with a twist! Instead of just taking a standard day trip from Cairns, there are so many other incredible ways to explore it. You could visit the Southern Great Barrier Reef from Lady Elliot Island, where the waters are crystal-clear and teeming with marine life, or combine your trip with the stunning Whitsundays from Hamilton Island for that perfect mix of reef and beach paradise.

For something truly special, try an overnight reef stay—waking up surrounded by the ocean is an experience like no other. The Great Barrier Reef is one of the most breathtaking natural wonders in the world, and exploring it in a more immersive way makes it even more magical!

What’s one top tip you’d give someone planning a trip to Australia?

Take the time to slow down and soak up the Aussie lifestyle. It’s the local experiences that make a trip truly special. And this applies to traveling anywhere—be open and try new things! Whether it’s tasting a meat pie from a local bakery, chatting with friendly Aussies at a cafe, or saying yes to an unexpected adventure like spotting wildlife on a guided tour, you’ll be surprised at how these little moments become the highlights of your trip. Australia has so much offer and the best way to experience it is with a curious and open mindset.

What are Australia’s top three highlights?

  • Sydney – the classic: Sydney is a must-see, with its iconic landmarks like the Opera House and Harbor Bridge. Take a ferry to Manly, relax at Bondi Beach, or explore the historic Rocks area. It’s a city full of culture, nature, and vibrant energy.
  • The Great Barrier Reef: As one of the Seven Natural Wonders, the Great Barrier Reef is breathtaking. Stretching from Northern Queensland to Lady Elliot Island, it offers incredible snorkeling and diving experiences. Don’t miss the Whitsundays for stunning beaches and crystal-clear waters.
  • Adelaide and Kangaroo Island: Adelaide offers a relaxed vibe and nearby wine regions. From here, take an overnight tour to Kangaroo Island, known for its pristine beaches and wildlife, offering a peaceful retreat into nature. It’s an experience that’ll leave you with lasting memories.

What’s a dish everyone should try when visiting Australia?

One of the best dishes to try in Australia is meat pies—they are a true Aussie classic! You can find them everywhere, from bakeries to cafes, and they come in a variety of fillings such as minced meat, gravy, cheese, and vegetables. Australia is also known for its barbecue culture, with “Aussie BBQ” being an iconic way to enjoy good food with family and friends.

When’s the best time to visit, in your opinion?

The shoulder seasons—spring (September to November) and fall (March to May)—are definitely the best times to visit Australia. During these months, the weather is pleasant, crowds are smaller, and prices are often lower.
