The best things to do in Canada according to a local expert

|

A land of superlatives, Canada doesn’t do anything by halves. From tremendous natural landscapes to hearty foods, and with people as warm and friendly as its land is wide, it’s a must-visit for anyone in search of larger-than-life experiences. One of our local experts, Laury shares her top favorite things to do in Canada, alongside a host of practical tips to fuel your wanderlust.

What do you love most about your home country, Canada?

What I love the most is the vast open spaces. It’s easy to go on a long hike during the weekend. I also really enjoy the culture, and I find Indigenous culture in particular to be very interesting. I also appreciate the wide variety of landscapes, from the towering mountains in the Rockies to forests, sea, and ocean.

Of all the many things to do in Canada, what would you say is a bucket list-topper?

If you enjoy animal watching and want to feel isolated from mass tourism, I recommend the Bella Coola region in British Columbia, where you can observe grizzlies from lodges that will take great care of you in breathtaking landscapes. I also recommend doing a loop by taking the ferry to explore the Inside Passage.

What advice would you offer first-time travelers?

I recommend immersing yourself in the vibe of a sugar shack in Quebec. It’s an authentic experience that invites sharing in a joyful atmosphere. Additionally, most sugar shacks accommodate dietary restrictions.

What are three top Canada travel highlights, in your opinion?

  • Tofino on Vancouver Island, the vibe there is truly unique. I recommend taking a seaplane flight between the ocean and the mountains for a magical moment.
  • I love the Cantons-de-l’Est region, which offers delicious local products and country-style restaurants ideal for foodies! You can also take advantage of your visit to the region to explore Mont-Mégantic National Park and listen to fascinating astronomy stories at the ASTROLab.
  • Finally, I really enjoy Bruce Peninsula Provincial Park with its vast expanses of crystal-clear water. If you’re in the area, I recommend taking a trip to Manitoulin Island.

When’s the best time to travel to Canada?

My favorite time to travel is from mid-September to mid-October, as I get to enjoy the still-summer temperatures and the beautiful autumnal colors in the parks.

Lastly, what’s one dish you’d recommend trying on a trip to Canada?

I really love and would recommend trying blueberry pie, which is a specialty of the Lac Saint-Jean region.
