There were too many highlights to choose from! Many things we did could not have been achieved in Europe because of health and safety regulations which are non-existent in Myanmar! Planks instead of gangways, rotting wooden bridges and quaysides were somewhat scary. The Golden Rock was a high spot but having to walk back down to the base camp, which we missed on the way up, was a disappointment and the subsequent climb up the mountainside was particularly challenging but wonderful when we made it! Every day had a different high spot, even with the excess of Pagodas and Buddha images.
We were never left wondering what would happen next. We had very different guides who gave us contrasting information on Buddhism, cultural life and politics providing an eclectic view of the country.
The dinner provided by the company, when we were thrilled to meet Yadanar who had organised the itinerary and Pascal Khoo Thwe, author of From the Land of Green Ghosts, was an absolute treat. Even our fellow passengers' wedding anniversary was marked with a generous gift for them.
