The accommodation was safe and secure, but not luxurious, which is what we had asked for - and this helped us to have as much contact with the local people and local businesses as possible.
The locally-based team took a lot of time and trouble to understand what type of trip we were looking for and our interests before drafting an itinerary. For example, they asked about what standard of accommodation we wanted and our previous experience of travelling in Africa. We then liaised over the details in the itinerary by email and telephone, and we were impressed that they made the effort to tailor the tour to our requirements. This personal service and attention to detail set them apart from other companies that we contacted.
For us, very little. Other people might want a more comfortable vehicle or a higher standard of accommodation if they are less confident about travelling in a developing country.
Our driver/guide had very good local knowledge and did not take any unnecessary risks. He also made sure that we were well looked after all of the time and he discussed the detailed itinerary with us each day.
Ghana is a fantastic country to visit. It has beautiful scenery, a rich cultural heritage, friendly and welcoming people, and it never gets cold. Be open minded and flexible - not everything is the same standard as developed countries (for example, there were frequent power cuts when we were there) and not everything will work on the same timetable that you anticipated. Just relax, slow down, immerse yourself in the experience and you'll have a great holiday!
