We really enjoyed our trip to Sri Lanka and were very pleased to have across Travel Local and through them their partners in Sri Lanka. It was good to be able to liaise direct with Praveen and use his local knowledge in booking our hotels and itinerary. We were more than happy with everything he arranged for us and would thoroughly recommend this way of booking a trip. Sri Lanka is a beautiful country with so much variety, which meant we were having new experiences every day.
Very well chosen places to stay, all of which we liked very much
There were 2 instances where although we were told the item was included, we were asked for extra money as the local team had not made the correct payment (entry to Wilpattu National Park and dinner at the Ficus home stay). Although slightly awkward at the time, both were sorted quickly with the help of Sisira, our driver. There were one or two items on our itinerary which didn’t materialise. (Market visit in Kandy, Kandy city tour with local guide). However, these were very small things which did not detract from our enjoyment of the trip
For the first half of our holiday we were driven by Sisira, who was a first class driver, we felt safe at all times with him and enjoyed his knowledge and sense of humour. He was courteous, always opening the car door and checking that we had remembered everything before setting off. Sadly half way through he had to unexpectedly leave us and was replaced by 2 brothers, the second of which, Manoj was a far cry from Sisira. Although he always picked us up on time, his driving was not of a good standard. Constantly hooting and flashing the lights at cars in front to get past, driving too close to the car in front and slamming on the brakes when he decided against overtaking at the last minute as well as constantly talking on his phone without a hands free device. His English was very limited and he made no attempt to give us any information. We appreciate that it was difficult for Sri Lankan Expedition to find a replacement at short notice and maybe there as no choice.
Make sure you eat the local food...it’s wonderful!
One of the highlights was our time at the Ficus Homestay near Kandy. Ruki Made us so welcome and we thoroughly enjoyed our cookery lesson with her and 2 ladies from the village and the afternoon tour of the village, visiting the local bakery, a lady making incense sticks and baskets as well as an ancestral home. Also the tuk tuk Safari to the tea plantations with Deen was fascinating. Actually the whole trip was memorable!
