Superb organisation and service by Max

The advice we got from the local company on how to structure our tour of China was really helpful and very responsive to our particular preferences and needs and the agency was happy too adapt our itinerary repeatedly as we learnt more about China. The hotels chosen were well located and the guides and drivers were very competent and provided overall very good service. Rather unexpectedly, I fell ill early in the tour and was wheelchair-bound for a couple of days: Charlie and Max at and the guides involved (Cathy and Sofia) all went out of their way to help us cope with the problem and to adapt our itinerary so that I could cope better. Excellent service all round.

What was good about our local partner based in China?

Responsiveness, flexibility and comprehensive knowledge, especially of southern China.

What could our local partner based in China improve on?

Already discussed the fact that the SSAW hotel in Shanghai misrepresents itself as being on the Bund and some clarification is needed for clients. Indigo Lodge Hotel is a little tired .

What did you think about the guides or drivers on your trip?

All very good and generally provided excellent customer service. One issue with most of the guides is that their English is generally limited to scripts they have mastered - difficult therefore to discuss the information they shared with us. Two exceptions that stand out are Amanda whose English was better than anyone else we had contact with in China and Sofia, whose English was as limited as most guides but whose desire to communicate was so strong that she easily made up for that.

What advice would you give to other travellers planning a trip to China?

Don't miss the Li River's amazing Karst landscape, the Mini Three Gorges on the Yangtse or the Long Rice Terraces. Seriously consider taking a Chinese rather than an American ship on Yangtse. Upgrade to first class on high-speed trains well worth the money. Not that impressed with Shanghai although, or perhaps because, it is said to represent the future of China.

What was the most memorable part of your trip?

Hard to say because of so many wonderful experiences: the River Li, mini Three Gorges, the Longji Rice Terraces, the minority villages we visited, Pingyao (especially Jing's Residence), the Terracotta Army.
