Ideas For Autumn Trips

Yunnan

Lijang Street FoodAutumn is a great time of year to be visiting China’s Yunnan province. Skies should be clear and relatively free of rain, with pleasant temperatures, getting a little cooler the higher up you go. The main draws are Dali, Lijiang and Shangri-la, but we strongly suggest trying to fit in some of the lesser visited, often charming places such as Shaxi, where local colour and traditions are still very much in evidence.

Sapa

Sapa ValleySapa, in Vietnam’s northern reaches, is a tricky place to get right. Many visitors want to see it in winter, but it is best between about mid-September and the end of October, and from early March to late April. Come here for incredible mountain views, seldom-visited hilltribe villages and the romance of being above the clouds. A good starting itinerary might take in Sapa and Hanoi, plus the incredible temple complex at Angkor in Cambodia.

Samarkand

SamarkandUzbekistan is particularly good in autumn. The skies are usually clear, sunny and warm – but not hot. Samarkand, Bukhara and Khiva are the main draws here. The city of Samarkand is one of the most evocative names in travel, bringing to mind the empire of Tamerlane and the explorers and spies of The Great Game.
