I'd recommend an extra day in Rome to explore a market. The Mercato Testaccio is a fantastic option for trying regional specialties and interacting with the locals.

Good to know

April, May, and September are the best months to visit Italy. You’ll find comfortable temperatures, fewer crowds, and more affordable prices. July and August are the busiest and hottest months, particularly in popular cities such as Rome, Venice, and Florence. October is one of Italy's best-kept secrets: harvest festivals, truffle season, and temperatures still warm enough to enjoy the coast.
Italian is the official language. English is widely spoken in hotels, restaurants, and tourist areas across major cities and popular destinations. In smaller towns and rural areas, less English is spoken. While it’s easy to get around by using English, a few basic Italian phrases go a long way and are appreciated by locals.
US citizens can visit Italy visa-free for up to 90 days within any 180-day period under the Schengen Agreement. Your passport must be valid for at least three months beyond your departure date, though six months is recommended, and you'll need at least two blank pages for entry stamps. Always check current entry requirements before you travel, as rules can change.
Italy uses the euro (€). Cards are widely accepted in cities and tourist areas, though smaller restaurants, markets, and rural businesses often prefer cash, so it's worth carrying some euros. ATMs are easy to find in most towns and cities, but foreign transaction fees may apply depending on your bank.
Italy is a boot-shaped peninsula in southern Europe, extending into the Mediterranean Sea and bordered by France, Switzerland, Austria, and Slovenia to the north. Rome is the capital, with Florence roughly in the center and Venice to the northeast. Italy also has nearly 450 islands, including Sicily and Sardinia, which are accessible by flight or ferry from the mainland.
Italy is a well-established, popular destination and is generally safe for travelers. Petty theft, including pickpocketing, is the most common concern in busy tourist areas, and standard travel precautions apply.
