There are many day tours and activities on offer here. Here are some recommendations:
For those who love history, a visit to the National and Saga Museums will give you an education on Iceland's Viking past For breathtaking views, take a stroll up the Hallsgrimskirja church. The architecture is fascinating also
From April - October, join a whale-watching excursion
For music lovers, try to catch a performance at Harpa Concert Hall. Don't be disappointed if you don't get a chance to hear the symphony, it is still a great place to visit because of its unusual architecture, waterfront location and outdoor terrace
Foodies can participate in one of the many food walking tours that operate around the city. This is a great chance to get an insider's knowledge on the best (and often hidden) food vendors
Game of Thrones enthusiasts can join a tour that departs the city and visits the famous filming locations of the popular series. Take a camera!
Iceland has a varied food scene and there are a multitude of restaurants and/or coffee-houses to take a break in. Whether you’d like to try out Icelandic cuisine, a la carte restaurants or are in the mood for fast food, you should have no trouble finding a restaurant that suits you needs. But please, don’t forget to stop by the small hot dog stand, called “Bæjarins bestu”, and try out our very special Icelandic hot dog. It’s a treat, we promise.
There are also a few shopping malls, if you’re into mood for shopping, the largest ones being Kringlan and Smaralind. Kringlan is not far from the city centre, while Smaralind is in Kopavogur. There you’ll find many popular brands!
If you’re travelling with your family and want a more relaxing start to your trip, there are so many geothermal water pools in the city to be enjoyed. Icelanders love to sit in hot tubs and pool - you can often find lively debates and discussions in the tubs, especially before noon.

Transfer from Reykjavik to Seljalandsfoss - Transfer from Reykjavik to Seljalandsfoss - Explore Seljalandsfoss waterfall
Day 2: Seljalandsfoss - Hella
Transfer from Reykjavik to Seljalandsfoss
Car Transfer: Depart Reykjavik in the morning and enjoy the scenic drive to a small town of Hvolsvollur for a quick technical stop before reaching Seljalandsfoss. The stop is a perfect opportunity to buy something to eat on the road.
Explore Seljalandsfoss waterfall
Excursion: Stop at Seljalandsfoss waterfall, where you can gain a different perspective by walking behind the curtain of cascading water. Seljalandsfoss waterfall along Iceland’s southern coast is fed by melting water from the famed glacier-capped Eyjafjallajokull volcano. This powerful waterfall cascades into a pretty meadow but is best known for the walking path that runs behind the curtain of water where visitors can enjoy a truly unique viewpoint from this angle. It’s the only known waterfall in the world that it is possible to walk behind.
Visit Stakkholtsgja ravine
Excursion: A Game of Thrones filming location
Next stop will explore a breathtaking canyon, which is just out of this world and one of the filming locations of Game of Thrones. Stakkholtsgjá canyon is a beautiful natural wonder, a 2 kilometers (1.2 mi) long canyon surrounded by 100 meters (330 ft ) high moss-covered cliffs.
Walking to the end of the canyon is one of the most rewarding short hikes in Iceland. This dramatic, towering canyon was the filming location of a scene in Game of Thrones season 7 when Jon Snow leads the team to ambush a pack of wights.
The palagonite cliffs have many interesting and dramatic forms, caves, narrow and deep ravines. Inside the canyon, there is a small creek, and you will find a dreamlike, beautiful waterfall in a high cave at the end of the track. It’s not just a stunning place, but a place you may think this is one of those places where elves and trolls live. This is one reason why Icelanders have loved and visited this canyon for many years.
Visit to the Valley of Thor
Excursion: The next stop is Þórsmörk, which translates as the “valley of Thor” in Icelandic. This beautiful valley is surrounded by glaciers and mountains, among which is Gígjökull, a glacier tongue. You’ll also get the chance to approach the edge of the famous Eyjafjallajökull that you were able to see from the vehicle earlier. The eruption of this glacier-volcano in 2010 interfered with air traffic all over Europe, making itself and Iceland famous at the same time.
Driving further into Þórsmörk valley, we’ll have to cross through some rivers in our jeep to arrive at the campsite. Here we’ll stop to give you the chance to go enjoy some short hikes, relishing the fantastic views of the glacial river beds along with the backdrop of the surrounding glaciers and mountains.
There may be some additional stops, depending on the time remaining as well as the weather conditions on the day of the tour, of course. One possibility is a visit to Nauthúsagil, a beautiful ravine with a waterfall at the end. Feel free to speak to your driver before you head off if you have any preferences in mind.
Visit Nauthúsagil Ravine
Excursion: On our way back we will stop at one of our favorite places. Nauthúsagil ravine is a true hidden gem of Iceland’s South Coast. Nauthúsagil’s famed characteristics are the rowan trees growing on the ridges, sometimes horizontally, creating a roof of leaves. We will walk through the narrow ravine and explore its unique, beautiful world. At the end of the ravine, there is an enchanting waterfall waiting for us. The combination of the waterfall and the light from above is magically beautiful.

Explore the South Coast in a Super Truck - Glacier hike at Solheimajokull Glacier - Visit Skógafoss
Day 3: Eyjafjallajokull - Reykjavik
Explore the South Coast in a Super Truck
Excursion: Black sand beaches, volcanoes, glaciers, waterfalls, and much more. Witness all that the South Coast has to offer from the comfort of your own luxury Super Truck on this private tour. With extra options available for the bold adventurers, we think that this personalised tour is the best choice for you and your travel companions.
You will be picked up from your accommodation and this excursion starts by heading towards Skógarfoss. This giant cascade stretches over 25 meters (82 feet) with falls that drop 60 meters (200 feet). This beautiful waterfall lies right between Mýrdalsjökull and Eyjafjallajökull glaciers.
Continuing on, you will visit the village of Vík on the South Coast. Along the way, we’ll stop at the popular and scenic Reynisfjara black sand beach. You have to be careful here, as the tide is strong enough to carry you out into the Atlantic without warning. So, never turn your back on the water here. The sight of the thundering waves falling heavily on the beach and crashing against the spooky Reynisdrangar sea stacks is seriously impressive.
The Dyrhólaey Promontory is the site where the North Atlantic puffin tends to nest in the summer months. Large numbers of these cute birds settle down here, making this another interesting stop to take on the tour.
Total duration of the day from the time we pick you up until we drop you off at your hotel in Reykjavik again is approx 8-9 hrs
Since this is a private tour, additional stops can be made en route, depending on the remaining time and the weather conditions so feel free to speak to your driver ahead of time about these.
After a full day out in Icelandic nature, you’ll return to Reykjavik in time for a delicious dinner at one of the city’s gourmet restaurants.
Glacier hike at Solheimajokull Glacier
Shared Excursion: Experience how it feels to walk on ice in this thrilling adventure!
You will walk on the Solheimajokull glacier, which is a part of the Myrdalsjökull glacier, on the South Coast of Iceland. After a safety briefing and a lesson in ice walking, you will head onto the glacier to experience this unique environment and look upon some amazing terrain, which include crevasses, sink holes and ice ridges. It is about 30-40 min walk from the base (on road 221) to the Glacier.
Total duration of the Glacier hike is approx. 3-4 hrs.
Important:
The Glacier walk does not require any special skills. The tour can be enjoyed by all people in good health that are able to walk on rugged terrain.
Included:
Guided tour
Helmet, Crampons, Ice axe and other safety equipment
Please bring:
Sensible, closed-toe footwear
Waterproof/quick dry clothing (no jeans) and layers
Visit Skógafoss
Excursion: Skogafoss is a waterfall in the south of Iceland at the cliffs of the former coastline. After the coastline had receded seaward (it is now at a distance of about 5 kilometres (3.1 miles) from Skogar village), the former sea cliffs remained. Skogafoss is unique because the waterfall comes directly from two glaciers, Eyjafjallajokull and Myrdalsjokull.
If you climb the 370 steps to the top of Skogafoss waterfall you’ll be rewarded with an awe-inspiring view out over south Iceland’s coastline. This is also the start of the Fimmvorduhals pass, a popular hiking route. Standing at 60 meters (197 ft) tall, the heavy veil of water is impressive and walking close enough envelops visitors in a cloud of spray, sound and refracted light. Due to the amount of spray the waterfall consistently produces, a single or double rainbow is normally visible on sunny days.
Explore Dyrholaey and the black sand beaches of Iceland’s South Shore
Excursion: The village of Vik is famous for its black sand beaches and its proximity to Dyrholaey promontory, a naturally formed arch in the cliff. Dyrholaey is a former island of volcanic origin, created by an eruption thousands of years ago.
Dyrholaey, which is a small peninsula on the south coast of Iceland, is famous for it‘s prominant and natural arch. It offers a great view of the black sand beaches around the village Vik, the black lava columns Reynisdrangar and to north, where the mighty volcano Katla sleeps undert he glacier Myrdalsjokull. On a clear day almost all the coastline west of Dyrholaey is visible, one can see almost all the way to Selfoss village.
Visit the Reynisfjara black sand beach and Reynisdrangar Sea Cliffs
Excursion: Reynisdrangar Sea Cliffs stand under the Reynisfjall Mountain, at the end of a dramatic stretch of black sand beach. They are towering, spiky basalt sea stacks jutting out from the ocean 66 meters (217 ft) into the air. The Reynisfjara beach, where the Reynisdrangar rock formations are located, was voted as one of the top ten beautiful non-tropical beaches in the world.
Reynisdrangar are a visual trademark for the village of Vik in Myrdal, and are teeming with nesting Arctic terns, fulmars and puffins. Folk legend says there were two trolls pulling a three-mast ship to the shore unsuccessfully, but were caught by the sunlight at dawn and turned into stone, as happens to trolls when they stay out until dawn. So there they sit just outside the beach forevermore.
You must remember if you visit Reynisdrangar, either from the east side from Vik or from Reynisfjara on the west side, that the ocean and the waves can be rough. The waves are strong and unpredictable, so people are advised to take extra care when visiting the area. A good rule of thumb is to never turn your back on the ocean.
The Reynisdrangar cliffs are just one of many attractions in Reynisfjara beach. The black sand has a major appeal on its own, the roaring ocean waves are powerful and chilling, and furthermore, there you can see spectacular patterns of basalt columns that nature has created. This and more makes Reynisfjara one of the most popular tourist destinations in Iceland.
Visit the Silver Circle in a Super Truck - Discover Hvalfjordur Fjord - Visit the Hraunfossar “’Lava” and Barnafoss waterfalls
Day 4: Borgarfjörður - Reykjavik
Visit the Silver Circle in a Super Truck
Excursion: Your local guide will meet you in Reykjavík where you’ll be picked up in your own private Super Truck
Hvalfjörður, whose name in Icelandic means the “whale fjord”, is the stunning star of the beginning of this tour. If you want to get away from it all, the road along Hvalfjörður is absolutely ideal. Here you’ll have the opportunity to visit what is left of the former whaling stations.
(Estimated journey time: 1 hour)
Our next stop will be at Deildartunguhver. The 97°C (200°F) water that flows out of this natural hot spring is used to heat the towns of Borgarnes and Akranes. With 180 litres of water escaping every second (47.5 gallons per second), this spring has the highest flow in all of Europe.
(Estimated journey time: 50 mins)
Hraunfossar, whose name translates as “lava waterfalls”, makes this place truly one-of-a-kind and extraordinarily beautiful. This natural wonder is not just one solitary body of water, like most waterfalls. Instead, it’s a collection of tiny streams that create countless tiny, white waterfalls. This water all falls down into Hvítá, the “white river” in Icelandic. While these falls are not powerful and have no great drop, they are beautiful. The contrast between the white water flowing out of the dark, solidified lava while surrounded by multi-colored plants is wondrous. These wide, gentle falls are the perfect place for photographers to hone their skills.
Barnafoss the “children’s waterfall”, is the next stop on the tour. It earned its name, according to legend, after two children fell into the river and drowned, even though they were supposed to remain at home while their mother and father went to church. While this is not a happy story, the cascade is really lovely. The steep rocks are the product of thousands of years of volcanic eruptions, so watching the white water run over them is quite beautiful, not to mention hypnotizing.
(Estimated journey time: 20 mins)
The last stop on the tour is Húsafell woodlands before departing to Langjökull Glacier. We’ll go off-road onto the ice cap before retuning to Reykjavik via highland road of Kaldidalur.
Total duration of the day from the time we pick you up until we drop you off at your hotel is approx 9-10 hrs.
Discover Hvalfjordur Fjord
Excursion: Hvalfjordur Fjord (Whale Fjord) is surprisingly not named for the number of whales spotted in the area, but rather for an ancient folktale involving an angry, red-headed whale that terrorized Iceland’s west coast until it was lured into a trap.
The innermost part of the fjord shows an interesting mixture of volcanic mountains and green vegetation in summertime. At Botnsá, Nootka lupine is common, along with other flowers and moss, as well as small forests of birch and conifers. The area displays a good example of the planting of forests, a project that has been going on in Iceland for some years.
Visit the Hraunfossar “’Lava” and Barnafoss waterfalls
Excursion: The Hraunfossar waterfalls (Lava Falls) in Borgarfjordur are an exceptionally beautiful and unusual natural phenomena. The water seems to magically appear from the lava but is actually a clear cold spring that surges through the ground and runs in rapids down into the Hvita River.
This series of waterfalls is formed by rivulets streaming over a distance of about 90 meters (300 ft) out of the Hallmundarhraun, a lava field which flowed from an eruption of one of the volcanoes lying under Langjokull glacier. The waterfall is recognisable by its turquoise blue waters, lending the surrounding environment distinctive colour. Heidarviga Saga mentions the engineer Musa-Bolverkur, who lived at the farm Hraunsas and says he was responsible for diverting the course of River Hvita to the north of the hill Hraunsas, its present course. Hraunfossar have been protected as a National Monument since 1987. A hiking trail leads from Hraunfossar to the nearby Barnafoss (Children’s Falls). There is a viewpoint at the car park offering an amazing view over the Lava Falls and Hvita River. The pedestrian bridge across the river was originally built in 1891 and renovated exactly a century later. A coffee shop at the waterfalls is open during the summer months. Hraunfossar are situated near Húsafell and Reykholt and lava-tube cave Víðgelmir is close by.
Visit the historic farm and church estate Husafell
Excursion: Húsafell is an historic farm and church estate in south-west Iceland that now serves as a hub for visitors, with amenities such as a swimming pool, golf course, convenience store, various types of accommodation and more. Húsafell is about 90 minutes drive from Reykjavik.
Húsafell's landscape is characterized by dense birch woods, lava formations, crystal-clear mountain springs, stunning ravines, glaciers, rushing glacial rivers and extraordinary animal and birdlife. Due to this, and its sunny and warm summer climate, Húsafell has always been a beloved getaway for Icelanders enjoying their own holidays. Husafell is also a splendid stop in the winter time, when the Northern Lights dance in vibrant colours across the darkened night sky.
Húsafell is a popular hiking destination in stunning nature, with something for everyone, from challenging treks up mountains, glaciers and ravines to simple circular walks in the woods. Visit Húsafell for a family friendly environment with plenty of activities for the younger travellers.
Near the Húsafell area are the natural attractions of Barnafoss and Hraunfossar waterfalls, as well as the underground caves of Víðgelmir og Surtshellir. The glaciers Eiríksjökull and Langjökull are not far away for those looking to do some glacial exploration.
Visit Langjokull glacier West side
Excursion: The shimmering glacier Langjokull is called the “Long Glacier” because it’s not very wide, but surprisingly long. From north to south the ice cap measures around 55 km (31 mi) long, but from east to west it reaches a width of only 20 km (12 mi).Centuries of snowfall have compacted to form Langjokull, which slowly slips downhill under the influence of gravity. The ice cap formed around 3,500 years ago. At the time, ancient civilizations populated the earth and woolly mammoths were still alive.
Visit Kaldidalur valley
Excursion: As the track winds through the rather barren Kaldidalur valley you’ll enjoy sweeping views of mountains and glaciers.
The valley lies between the rounded volcanic summit Ok (1198m) and Iceland´s second largest glacier, Langjokull (1,450m) - the route’s highest elevation is 727m.
To get a fantastic view over the area take an easy hike up to the top of Meyjarsæti (237m). It is close to the road just before a small lake called Sandklyftavatn.
In the distance, you may see Skjaldbreidur (1,060m) a shield volcano, a type which is rare in other volcanically active countries.
On the way through Kaldidalur the icecaps, Þorisjokull, Langjokull, Ok and Eiriksjokull can be seen, weather permitting.
By the highest point of the road is a big cairn. In past times, when people traveled this route on foot or horseback for the first time, they piled rocks into a cairn for good luck, often with a note or poem.
Cairns like these were sometimes called Beinakerling, or Bony Lady. Nowadays, people still add rocks to the cairn, mostly for fun, but being naturally superstitious, Icelanders do it to be on the safe side and to ward off any bad luck. Further along the road, you might glimpse a rock with a face carved into it, courtesy of the artist Pall Guðmundsson from Husafell farm, a very talented sculptor
