Spotlight on our local partners in Sri Lanka

|

With eight UNESCO World Heritage Sites, lush green mountains, and beaches that look like they belong on a postcard, Sri Lanka is a small island that delivers big experiences. Our local partners have been running tours since 2009 and know the island like the back of their hand. Passionate about moving beyond mainstream tourism, they focus on creating authentic, immersive journeys that showcase the true heart of Sri Lanka. We caught up with Viraj, a Sri Lanka local expert, to hear about life on the island and get his advice for travelers planning their visit.

What is daily life like in Sri Lanka?

Aside from bustling Colombo, life in Sri Lanka is easygoing and relaxed. Though it’s a small island, Sri Lanka offers incredible diversity, beaches, jungles, and mountains all in one place. Sri Lankans love singing, playing sports (we’re huge cricket fanatics!), and celebrating in style. It’s a multicultural country where Sinhalese, Tamils, and Muslims live together in harmony. One of my fondest personal memories is Sri Lanka winning the Cricket World Cup in 1996 – a truly unforgettable moment.

What are your favorite places to visit?

I really enjoy the rural areas of Sri Lanka, especially the tea-growing regions like Nuwara Eliya and Hatton. These plantations are rich with history, you can still find British-built chapels, Scottish and Tudor-style planters’ bungalows, English railway lines, old clubs once used by British planters, and colonial-style buildings throughout the area. The climate in these regions is cool, and the views of distant mountains and valleys are absolutely breathtaking. I think what draws me in most is the long and fascinating history, there’s always something new to discover.

Can you give us three words that represent Sri Lanka?

Culture, food, and wildlife; all three are truly unique to Sri Lanka. Many species are found only here, the recipes are authentic and local, and the culture is unlike anywhere else in the world.

How would you describe Sri Lankan culture?

Sri Lanka’s culture is incredibly diverse. While most people speak Sinhala as their native language, English is widely spoken as well. The Sri Lankan Tamil and Muslim communities primarily speak Tamil, adding to the country’s rich cultural tapestry. Known for its warm hospitality, Sri Lanka is famous for its friendly and welcoming people, especially toward visitors.

What is your favorite food to try?

Traditional Lagoon Crab Curry, packed with bold spices and bursting with flavor! It’s a distinctive and delicious dish you won’t want to miss.

Do you have any cool facts about Sri Lanka that most people wouldn’t know?

Sri Lanka is home to a resident whale community just off the coast of Mirissa, where the continental shelf lies very close to the shore. For a long time, these whales were believed to be migratory, traveling between Africa and Australia. However, recent research has revealed that these magnificent creatures actually live in the area year-round, making Mirissa one of the best places for consistent whale watching.

What experiences should people traveling to Sri Lanka not miss?

It’s tough to pick just one! The Cultural Triangle, with its five UNESCO World Heritage Sites, is definitely a must-see, along with spending a few nights in a national park to encounter local wildlife up close. Ella is another highlight, it’s incredibly scenic and perfect for hiking. Plus, the train ride from Ella to Kandy is considered one of the most beautiful train journeys in the world. Beyond the sights, be sure to try traditional Sri Lankan food and take the time to connect with the locals, everyone is incredibly friendly and welcoming.

What are your top tips for TravelLocal customers?

To make the most of your Sri Lanka vacation, plan for at least 10 to 14 days to both explore and unwind. Allow yourself two days to rest upon arrival, and aim to spend a minimum of 2 to 3 nights in each destination. Although Sri Lanka is a relatively small island, travel between locations can take longer than expected, so it’s best to avoid rushing and enjoy a more relaxed pace.

Do you have any memorable experiences of being a local guide?

Definitely, guiding our first large group was a standout moment. We took them on a trekking expedition to Adam’s Peak and the nearby hills. Originally, we started as an online tour operator focusing on couples and families, so leading that first big group was truly a memorable experience.
