Your trip to Chile: top tips from a local expert

|

Elemental Chile inspires wonder at every turn. A narrow ribbon along South America’s western coast, it features a landscape of arid deserts and subtropical rainforests, high-altitude salt plains and glacial fields and fjords – the power of nature is tangible here. The warmer north encompasses the Atacama Desert and the llama herders of the Andean highlands, the center features broad pampas and wineries, while the south is dotted with cool forests, volcanoes and lakes. With such sheer and overwhelming diversity, it can be difficult to know where to begin, so we’ve caught up with our local expert Lorena for her top tips to help you plan your trip to Chile.

What is your favorite thing about living in Chile?

I love the many options there are to experience diverse landscapes and activities, from the desert to the ocean, the mountains to the lakes. I also really enjoy the warm hospitality of the Chilean people.

What top tips do you have for travelers planning a trip to Chile?

Don’t be afraid to try new things: talk to the locals, eat our food, try a pisco sour (rica rica in Atacama, calafate in Patagonia), challenge yourself to a long hike… there is so much to see and do, you might need a vacation when you go back home!

Also, be prepared for all sorts of weather. Both the Atacama Desert and Patagonia have changing weather and extreme temperatures, so dress in layers to take off/put on as needed, and always carry sunblock, water, and a hat.

What are three top places anyone should visit on a trip to Chile?

  • The Atacama Desert offers many options including amazing landscapes, trekking, bathing, stargazing, interacting with indigenous people, and top-notch food experiences.
  • Easter Island is mystical on its own, with fascinating culture, history, and cuisine.
  • Patagonia is one of the most beautiful places on Earth, whether you want to rough it out, enjoy a luxurious stay, or anything in-between.

What would be your must-try recommendation for foodies?

Seafood! Definitely try our king crab (chupe) and congrio (a type of fish that can be served grilled, fried, or in a soup called caldillo de congrio).

When would you say is the best time to visit Chile?

Most tourists come between November and March, but October, April and May are great too (and less crowded). The Atacama Desert and Easter Island can be seen year-round, and snow-skiing is best enjoyed in July-August.
