Indonesia is generally safe in popular areas like Bali, Yogyakarta, and the Gili Islands. Natural disasters such as volcanic activity and earthquakes are worth being aware of, given Indonesia's position on the Pacific Ring of Fire. Always check the latest travel advisories before you go.
US citizens need a visa to enter Indonesia. Options include applying online for an e-visa within 90 days of arrival or purchasing a visa on arrival at the airport. An arrival card must also be completed online within 72 hours of arrival. Bali visitors additionally pay a IDR 150,000 tourist levy. Always verify current entry requirements before you travel, as rules can change.
Indonesia is an archipelago nation in Southeast Asia, stretching across the equator between the Indian and Pacific oceans. It lies between mainland Southeast Asia to the northwest and Australia to the south, sharing land borders with Malaysia on Borneo, Papua New Guinea on the island of New Guinea, and Timor-Leste on Timor.
Indonesia's currency is the Indonesian rupiah (IDR). Cash is widely used across the country, particularly outside Bali, so carrying local currency is advisable. ATMs are readily available in tourist areas, though less reliable on more remote islands. Credit cards are accepted at larger hotels, restaurants, and shops in Bali, but smaller businesses and local markets almost always prefer cash.
Indonesian, known as Bahasa Indonesia, is the official national language. It is widely considered one of the easier Asian languages for English speakers to pick up, with a straightforward structure and no tonal elements. English is widely spoken in hotels, and by tour operators and tourist businesses throughout Bali and other popular destinations, though less so in rural and more remote areas.
Indonesia is the world's largest island nation, comprising more than 17,000 islands, 6,000 of which are inhabited. The five main islands are Java, Sumatra, Borneo (shared with Malaysia and Brunei), Sulawesi, and New Guinea (shared with Papua New Guinea). Bali is the most popular island, but other destinations for travelers also include Lombok, the Gili Islands, Flores, and the remote Raja Ampat.
