We believe that to best experience the romantic essence of France, you need more than just a trip. You need a journey shaped by those who know it best. Longer spring days and smaller crowds: April to May
Fall’s scenic harvest season: September to November
Winter sports and festive magic: December to February
No time of year captures the magic and essence of France quite like the fall season, when a bountiful period of harvest kicks off and rural terroir traditions come alive. The popular vendange (grape harvest) takes place, truffle hunting is in full swing across dewy forests, and ripe fruit and nuts (from figs and pears to quinces and chestnuts) are collected to add color and texture to the dinner table. This is a time of hearty celebration, too, as local festivals bring a huge variety of seasonal flavors to the fore across the country.

We really enjoyed our trip! And when my fiancée developed a strained knee about halfway through, TravelLocal helped us arrange wheelchair access at remaining itinerary venues. I recommend them very highly.

Good to know

The capital of France is Paris, a hub of art, culture, history and gastronomy in the north-central Île-de-France region. Divided by the Seine river, its northern Right Bank and southern Left Bank are split into 20 municipal arrondissements, each one filled with individual character and charm. The capital’s immersive boulevards and landmark sites, from the Eiffel Tower to the 12th-century Notre-Dame Cathedral, offer a showcase of historic elegance and architectural grandeur, and make the perfect backdrop for a romantic European city break.
France uses the euro (€). Credit and debit cards are accepted in most hotels, restaurants, and shops in cities and popular destinations. Carrying a small amount of cash is useful for shopping at local markets, or for exploring rural areas. ATMs are widely available, though fees can apply when withdrawing from foreign bank accounts.
US citizens can visit France visa-free for up to 90 days, as France is part of the Schengen Area. The US government recommends that your passport be valid for three months for international travel, though six months is recommended. You'll also need at least one blank page available for entry stamps. Always check current entry requirements before you travel, as rules can change.
France is generally a safe destination for travelers. Pickpocketing and petty theft can occur in crowded tourist areas, so normal precautions apply. The US State Department currently rates France at Level 2: Exercise Increased Precaution due to local unrest in major cities. For the most up-to-date information on travel advisories and safety guidance, check the US Government Travel Advisory for France.
