“Kid, next time I say 'Let's go to Bolivia', let's go to Bolivia.”
You don't have to be a fan of the wilderness to enjoy Bolivia, but it helps.
Huge tracts of the country are remote, barren and eerily beautiful, and while you could happily fill a fortnight with urban distractions, that would be missing the point. Visitors will uncover Bolivia's personality in the towns and cities, but to get under its skin and into its soul, you need to delve into the wilds. From the stark and unforgettable scenery of the highlands to the steamy tangle of the rainforests far below, Bolivia's wilderness is the unmissable counterpoint to the vibrant and intense indigenous culture of its people.
3 Things You Shouldn’t Miss In BoliviaEl Camino de la Muerte
Brace yourself for the ride of your life: grab your bike and your nerves of steel and hurtle 56 kilometres (4000m descent) down the narrow switchback track. 'Death road' is no walk in the park, more a plunge in the jungle, especially since there are no crash barriers.
Salt of the Earth
The immense snowy white expanse of the Salar de Uyuni salt plain is an iconic image of Bolivia and has to be seen to be believed. There is even a hotel constructed entirely from salt if you fancy an overnight stop in this savoury wilderness.
Head down to warm up
After spending a few days exploring the chilly highlights of the 4000m altiplano, the inviting towns of the subtropical Yungas valleys feel luxuriously balmy and verdant. Settle in for some down time, or strike out on foot along one of the famously scenic inca trail treks which are easily accessible from here.
