Spotlight Q&A: Finland travel tips from a local expert

|

Famously known for being one of the happiest countries in the world, Finland is the perfect pick for soul-stirring scenes, smile-inducing hospitality, and mood-boosting experiences. In this Nordic gem you could hike scenic trails across expansive forests (these make up more than 70% of the country), soak up Rovaniemi’s Yuletide charms, and conquer Finnish Lapland’s snowy landscape by snowmobile or husky safari – under the glow of the northern lights, if you’re lucky. Here we caught up with our local expert Haneen, for all of her on-the-ground Finland travel tips and insights, to help you make the most of your visit no matter the season.

Top Finland travel tips from a local expert

To start, what do you love most about living in Finland?

My favorite thing about Finland is definitely the astonishing nature in all seasons. Wintertime is mesmerizing with all the snow and aurora dancing in the sky, while summer is breathtaking with all the lakes and forests.

What are some must-dos on a trip to Finland?

I would strongly recommend visiting outside of peak time for the best possible experience. Also, the Icebreaker Ship is a great premium experience and a must-do that not many visitors know about.

What advice do you have for travelers hoping to make the most of their Finland travel experience?

Go out in Finnish nature to enjoy the magnificent landscapes, try the rich and flavorful local cuisine, and meet the lovely animals!

Could you share your top three destination highlights for Finland?

  • The northern lights (aurora borealis): Lapland is one of the best places in the world to see the northern lights, with up to 200 visible nights per year. The clear, dark skies and lack of light pollution create ideal conditions, especially between September and April.
  • Santa Claus Village in Rovaniemi: This is the official hometown of Santa Claus, making it a must-visit, especially for families or those looking for a bit of festive magic year-round. You can meet Santa, cross the Arctic Circle, and send postcards from the Santa Claus Post Office.
  • Sámi culture and Arctic wilderness: Lapland is home to the Indigenous Sámi people. Visiting gives insight into their traditional lifestyle, reindeer herding, handicrafts (duodji), and joik singing. Combine cultural visits with immersive Arctic nature—frozen lakes, snow-covered forests, and national parks like Urho Kekkonen and Pallas-Yllästunturi.

When planning out their Finland travel checklist, what’s one thing foodies must try?

Poronkäristys (sautéed reindeer) is a must-try: this is the signature dish of Lapland and is deeply tied to Sámi culture and Arctic traditions. Reindeer meat is lean, flavorful, and sustainably sourced, as herding is a centuries-old practice in the region.

When’s the best time to visit Finland, in your opinion?

Late January through March is the best time to visit Finland for snow, the northern lights, and winter magic. Long, dark nights offer the best aurora viewing opportunities, and in wintertime, husky safaris, snowmobiling, reindeer rides, skiing and more incredible activities are in full swing.

December is especially magical for its Christmas atmosphere, particularly in Rovaniemi, home to Santa Claus Village. The only downside about visiting in December is the big crowds everywhere, and also the difficulty you’ll have in making reservations at restaurants. However, you’re guaranteed to see deep snow covering the landscape—perfect for those who wish to embrace Arctic scenery and winter sports.
