Our first trip to the Middle East

We found Oman to be a country of fascinating contrasts. The people are very friendly and helpful. Muscat is a very modern gleaming city of white marble buildings and fantastic roads yet very close to the desert and the mountains.

What was good about our local partner based in Oman?

All arrangements were seamless. They communicated well during the booking process. All the hotels booked were suitable to our needs.

What could our local partner based in Oman improve on?

The driver found it necessary to rearrange some of the days to more sensibly distribute the time. Either our itinerary or our driver/guide was wrong about there being an old souq in Seeb. The itinerary mentioned it but the driver denied its existence. In fact all we did was go to a small fish market in this town when we had been to a larger and more interesting one in Muscat the day before. On that same day we made a stop at Fanja which the guidebooks say is a picturesque village with good views but the driver said that there was only a small street selling traditional pots. Again something seems to be amiss. This was the first day of our tour and not a good start.

What did you think about the guides or drivers on your trip?

Our driver looked after us very well. However we were disappointed not to be driven by somebody whose family had lived in Oman for generations as we were not able to fully discuss Omani customs and family traditions. We felt that he generally showed a lack of enthusiasm, but not when he drove us through the Wadi Ghul and on the dunes in the desert!

What advice would you give to other travellers planning a trip to Oman?

All of the above (Seeb and Fanja) and we personally found the Bedouin camp very contrived and not worth a visit. We were also underwhelmed by the visit to the Bimmah Sinkhole and Fins Beach. Think twice about going to watch the turtles out of season. We didn't see any at all! Wadi Al Madeen was certainly not worth a visit. Our guide only took us because it was on the itinerary but we soon left.

What was the most memorable part of your trip?

All aspects of the desert from me. The fact of being so high in the mountains from my husband.
