Off The Beaten Track in Ghana

Ghana is a destination which rarely makes the average itinerary. A little off the beaten track, with a whole lot to offer, it is a vibrant slice of authentic Africa. It boasts everything from wildlife to urban experiences (and a surprisingly exciting food scene). As we put the spotlight on this West-African highlight, here are all the reasons you should make it your next destination…

The Ghanaian culture

Ghana is living proof that there is more to Africa than just safaris. For a taste of rural village life, few places are better than Atsiekpoe. A picturesque village on the banks of the River Volta, it is home to a community-based tourism project which empowers local people and preserves their way of life. Ideal for a few days of cultural immersion, the villagers run workshops teaching visitors how to cook, fish and farm with traditional methods. You can also look around the local market, attended by people of the surrounding villages, and join in with their evening dance performances.

For a more urban experience, sleepy Elmina offers charming colonial architecture and the famous St George’s Castle; a UNESCO world heritage site. Being located right on the coast, it’s also a great place for sampling local fish delicacies.

Finally, if you’re not afraid of a little hustle and bustle, Accra is a wonderful cosmopolitan hub. Ghana’s most populous and ethnically diverse city is home to museums, castles and a glittering coastline. It also possesses a great shopping scene but be prepared to drive a hard bargain.

The amazing wildlife

Alongside these cultural treasures, Ghana boasts some great safari destinations. Its national parks are widely considered to be some of the best value in Africa (probably because Ghana is far from the average tourist itinerary!) The north of the country boasts Ghana’s largest nature reserve: Mole.

With at least 94 species of mammal, including a large population of African elephants, the park offers an immersive and exciting experience all year round. It is also one of a handful of reserves in Africa where it is possible to take a walking safari.

Alternatively, central Ghana is home to Kakum National Park, a huge body of untouched rainforest with footbridges weaving among the canopy, and home to vibrant and diverse species of flora and fauna. Although not yet recognised as a major safari destination, Ghana has plenty to offer lovers of the great outdoors.

The adventure

Despite its sleepy charm and slow pace of life, Ghana boasts fantastic options for more adventurous travellers. The Wli waterfalls, found in the east of the country, provide hiking routes for all abilities, as well as outdoor swimming opportunities. As Ghana’s highest waterfalls, they are a must-see for any visitor.

Alternatively, Lake Bosomtwe is an ideal base for horse riding excursions, kayaking or cycling tours. With its clear blue waters, it’s a haven for visitors to enjoy at their leisure. For a quick day trip, just south of the Wli waterfalls, is a mountain trek up to Amedzofe, a small town in the Avatime Mountains. Climb up to this remote settlement and enjoy the stunning panoramic views across the region.
