Detailed Itinerary

Tour the Golden Circle

Reykjavik - Geysir - Gullfoss

Day 1: Tour the Golden Circle

Today you'll pick up your rental car, either at the airport or in Reykjavik, depending on your schedule. You can then hit the road and begin your adventure.

The Golden Circle is Iceland's most famous sightseeing route and it is not to be missed. This trio of incredible sights are Thingvellir National Park, the Geysir Geothermal Area and Gullfoss Waterfall. Thingvellir, a historically significant site, is located in the rift valley between the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates. The highlight of the Geysir Geothermal Area is the Strokkur Geyser, which erupts 30m up into the air every 10 minutes or so. Finally, Gullfoss, the golden falls, is one of Iceland's most stunning waterfalls. You'll see all three of these sights in one packed day. Then it's time to check into your hotel and unwind for a free evening.

Waterfalls & black-sand beaches

Seljalandsfoss - Skogafoss - Reynisfjara

Picture-perfect Skogafoss Waterfall is another must-see and the cascade here is often accompanied by dancing rainbows. Further east, the black-sand beaches of Reynisfjara offer fantastic views of the Reynisdrangar sea stacks and the Dyrholaey Cliff.

As part of today's itinerary, you'll also visit the Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon, the most famous in Iceland, dotted with icebergs that flow out to the sea and are then washed up on the gorgeous Diamond Beach.

With several less-visited glacier lagoons, the ancient Fjadrargljufur canyon and charming towns of southeast Iceland are sure to impress. If your visit is during the winter you could try glacier hiking or visit an ice cave, while in summer, boat trips across the lagoon are a great option.
