Tbilisi

Half day tour of Tbilisi - the city of hot springs

Day 2: Tbilisi

Half day tour of Tbilisi - the city of hot springs
Excursion: Today, explore Georgia’s energetic capital, Tbilisi. Tread through the old districts of the city, twist around its narrow streets, and be mesmerised by the multicoloured houses, patterned balconies and varying examples of modern architecture. Begin the adventure at the 13th-century Metekhi church, perching proudly on a rocky bank that tumbles into the Mtkvari River. From its elegant gardens, admire magnificent views of the old city and its rainbow-like buildings toppling above one another. As you wind your way along the little streets, you will come across the main sights of Tbilisi, such as the clock tower. This is considered one of the city’s most emblematic structures, built by puppet master Rezo Gabriadze. Marvel at its fairytale-like design. Continue to the bathing district, famous for Sulphur bathhouses and understand their history. The name T′bili or T′bilisi translates as ‘warm location’ and was given to the city because of the area's numerous sulphuric hot springs. Afterwards, gaze at panoramic views of the town´s glimmering lights from the 4th-century Narikala Fortress.

Car Transfer: Approx. 3 hrs. (155 km.)

Ananuri Architectural Complex
Excursion: The Ananuri architectural complex (17th century) is made of two churches and the fortress which overlook the Zhinvali water reservoir. The carvings on the churches are one of the best examples of Georgian art.

Walk to the Gergeti Trinity church
Excursion: The striking Gergeti Trinity Church sits proudly atop a mountainside, which drops into the banks of the river Chkheri at an elevation of 2170 metres. This is set under the towering Mount Kazbegi, one of the highest glaciers in the Caucasus. Today, you will embark on a trek which takes you from the verdant woodlands below to the walls of this breathtaking 14th century Orthodox church. On a clear day, the views from here are outstanding. It takes around 2 and a half hours to get to the top, and is mostly uphill. In the face of such astonishing beauty, the exterior of the building becomes more stunning in its modesty. In the Soviet era, it was briefly abandoned, yet when you visit you will feel as though you have stepped back into a bygone era.

Day 4: Gori - Tbilisi

Transfer from Kasbegi to Gori
Other Transfer: For this transfer to Gori you will travel for around 3 hours (185 km.)

Explore Uplistsikhe Cave Town
Excursion: On the outskirts of Gori lies the extraordinary Uplistsikhe Cave Town (1st millennium BC). The ancient town contains striking structures dating the Early Iron Age to the Late Middle Ages, and is a dramatic point through which the Great Silk Road used to pass. Walk along the historic stone walkways and stairwells, and you'll encounter dwelling quarters, wine-cellars, bakeries, a three-nave basilica church hewn out of rock and an antique theatre. These rock-cult cultures have a fascinating variety of architectural origins, from Anatolia and Iran to pagan and Christian influences. The site is a place of mystery and enchant; it sits atop a sandstone cliff edging along the cascading Mtkvari river. You won't have seen anything like this before. It is recommended you wear sturdy shoes for this excursion, as there are steep slopes, crumbling pathways and open pits.

Joseph Stalin's Museum
Excursion: In Gori, you'll visit the birthplace and the house of Joseph Stalin, one of the world's most notorious dictators. You'll learn about his place in Georgian history and the journey he took to become one of the most feared leaders in the modern world. The museum itself consists of three parts: the childhood house where Stalin grew up, his armoured train carriage and a small museum dedicated to his life. Many of the exhibits are written in Georgian or Russian, so we recommend a guide and/or headphones. We also suggest taking this museum with a pinch of salt; there is very little mention of his atrocities against humanity, and the exhibits have been widely viewed as leaning toward a claim to fame above all else. This bias paints him as a prominent historical figure, rather than a grim dictator. The museum is still well worth the visit, even if it is just to glean an insight into how differently history can be displayed!

Transfer from Gori to Mtskheta
Car Transfer: Approx. 50 min.

Visit Mtskheta - the ancient capital of Georgia
Excursion: Enjoy discovering the enchanting ancient capital and religious centre of Georgia – Mtskheta. This 3000 year old city is the spiritual hub of Georgia and holds great importance for locals and visitors alike. On this visit, absorb the mystical atmosphere as you explore its historical highlights; Jvari church (6th century) and Svetitskhoveli Cathedral (11th century), where the Robe of Christ is buried. Both are UNESCO World Heritage sites.

Privat transfer from Tbilisi to Sighnaghi
Car Transfer: Travel from capital Tbilisi to beautiful Sighnaghi, in the wine-region of Kakheti. Estimated travel time - 2 hrs.

Visit Sighnahgi - a beautiful old town in the Kakheti region
Excursion: Today, you'll traverse the spectacular Kakheti region in search of ancient towns and world renowned wine-making. Along the way, admire the snowy Caucasus mountains and rolling fertile valleys beneath. Eventually, you'll reach the quaint 18th century town of Sighnaghi. Accompanied by a friendly guide, the old fences, tiny houses with tile roofs and decorated balconies will undoubtedly impress you. In a way, the town is reminiscent of picturesque villages in Tuscany, further improved by colourful 18th century architecture. The town is huddled away behind stone fortifications which boast 23 individual watchtowers; climb to the top of these, and you're guaranteed epic vistas of Alazani valley and the Great Caucasus mountains. The adored artist Nikala Pirosmani was from Sighnaghi, and you can view his paintings in the town's National Museum. Sighnaghi also boasts exquisite Georgian cuisine, so don't hesitate in asking your guide to stop off at some favourite eateries. If shopping is your thing, there are endearing souvenirs sold from boutique stalls and vendors, particularly on the street of Gorgasali, where you'll come across knitted clothes and woven rugs.

Lunch with local Sighnahgi family
Excursion: For lunch we will visit a local family and immerse ourselves in the rhythms of rural life. You will have a chance to taste a delicious homemade lunch and wine.

Tsinandali Palace
Excursion: Tsinandali is a small village in the Kakheti district. In the village is Tsinandali Palace, former residence of 19th-century aristocratic poet Alexander Chavchavadze. He inherited the large 18 hectare estate from his father and later turned it into a cultural and intellectual centre for the country, which is how it has remained. The place regularly hosts exhibitions, concerts, literary events, and masterclasses. The estate has a memorial house, a landscape garden, a historical winery, a wine cellar, a hotel and a café for visitors to enjoy.

Visit a wine cellar in the Kakheti region
Excursion: You will enjoy wine tasting in a Kakhetian village. Here you will taste wine made by traditional way in Kvevri (clay vessel). This method of wine making is inscribed on the UNESCO Intangible Heritage List.
