India offers great value for visitors, but as the economy there has developed, and as people there start to explore their own country, prices have started creeping up, especially for the more ’boutique’ properties with real charm. Nevertheless, there are plenty of things you can do to control costs.

Don’t go in peak season. November to March is generally the busiest period for visitors. Consider travelling outside of these months to get better rates at the hotels. October and April are still decent times to visit; if you can stand the heat then there are some excellent deals to be had in Rajasthan for June, July and August. It is hot, but it’s a dry heat and all hotels have air-con.

Fly via the Gulf. Direct flights from the UK are obviously the most convenient way to get to India. If these are looking pricey, try flying on one of the Gulf airlines. These have excellent links to the sub-continent, and with more airlines flying the route, there’s more competition.

Cut down on internal flights. India has an excellent network of trains, and taking a train journey in India is an experience in itself. If you do need to take some flights you are best off booking these yourself, in advance, to get the best fares.

Go to local restaurants/give street food a try. When you’re on the ground, ‘tourist’ restaurants tend to be pricier. Be brave and give cheaper local restaurants or street food stalls a try. Stick to popular ones well frequented by locals and you should be fine – to be extra sure, stick to vegetarian food.
