Loudenvielle - Saint Aventin

Tandem paragliding flight - Explore Loudenvielle (summer) - Stand up paddle boarding

Tag 2: Loudenvielle - Saint Aventin

Tandem paragliding flight
Excursion: Seeing the beautiful mountains from a paraglider is an unforgettable experience and a year round activity in the Pyrenees . On a tandem paragliding flight you'll be safely harnessed to your experienced instructor as you take off from a hillside high above the Louron Valley. After a 15 minute flight you'll land safely at the head of the picturesque lac de Génos. A tandem paragliding experience is open to all ages.

Explore Loudenvielle (summer)
Excursion: The authentic village of Loudenvielle is in a spectacular setting at the head of the Louron Valley in the central French Pyrenees. Spend a couple of hours exploring the quaint back streets, seek out 'chez Rogé' for refreshments and wile away some time alongside the picturesque Lac de Génos.

Stand up paddle boarding
Excursion: See the beautiful high mountains that overlook the Louron valley from a different perspective as you take to the stand up paddleboard on the Lac de Génos. Individual and double kayaks are also available. This is a self-guided activity on which you can spend up to 2 hours on the lake.

Bagneres-de-Luchon - Hospice de France

Explore Luchon (summer) - A night at a mountain refuge

Tag 3: Bagneres-de-Luchon - Hospice de France

Explore Luchon (summer)
Excursion: Bagneres-de-Luchon, or Luchon for short, is a lovely old Victorian spa town which has a lively vibe in the summer months and during the winter ski season. On the main street, les allées d'Etigny, you'll find shops that sell all manner of local produce as well as cafes, bars and restaurant that serve great value food and drink. In July and August and during the ski season, a bubble lift will whisk you from the town centre up to the Superbagnères plateau in just 15 minutes. There, you can enjoy a walk with spectacular mountain views and have lunch at our recommended restaurant with its scenic outdoor terrace.

A night at a mountain refuge
Excursion: Sometimes it's good to go truly off-grid, where there's no mobile signal and no internet. A digital detox! A night in a mountain refuge is an unforgettable experience in a truly exceptional setting. It's the opportunity for busy families to re-connect with each other and leave the worries of the world behind. The start of the hike up to the refuge is a 20 minute drive from Luchon. From there, you can count on 2-3h to reach the refuge in its privileged situation next to a lake which is just perfect for a sunset dip. After a hearty dinner (included in your package) you'll retire to bed either in a sturdy external frame tent or in a dormitory in the refuge. Breakfast in the morning is included in your stay and you may choose the option of a packed lunch too.
In summer months we would advise you to hike up to the refuge in the morning before it gets too hot.

Hike from a mountain refuge

Tag 4: Hospice de France - Saint Aventin

Hike from a mountain refuge
Excursion: Rather than heading straight back down to the valley after your night at the mountain refuge, why not walk up to the Port de Venasque, a notch in the rocky mountainside which marks the border between France and Spain. It'll only take you around 30 minutes on a well trodden, well marked path but it does involve some 'up'! From the border point, you have dramatic views of the highest peak in the Pyrenees, Pic Aneto (3404m alt), and the beautiful Benasque valley below. Retrace your steps and follow the path back down to Hospice de France (count on 1 to 2 hours of walking) where lunch on the sunny terrace of the restaurant will be in order!

Saint-Béat - Saint Aventin

River rafting fun on the Garonne - Walk from Col de Menté

Tag 5: Saint-Béat - Saint Aventin

River rafting fun on the Garonne
Shared Excursion: At the river rafting base at Saint Beat 25 minutes from Luchon you'll get kitted out with wetsuit, helmet and lifejacket before the short minibus transfer up the Aran valley into Spain and to the river rafting drop in point near Bossost. Once in the raft with your instructor, you'll wait for the hydro-electric facilities up river to release the water that will swell the levels downstream. Then you're off for an action-packed, fun-filled descent which is will satisfy even the adenaline-hungry teens' lust for adventure! Less adrenaline-fuelled river rafting experiences are also available for those who prefer a gentler river rafting outing.

Walk from Col de Menté
Excursion: From the col de Menté which is 15 mins up the hill from Saint Beat, enjoy an easy (approx 30 minutes) family friendly walk along a gently climbing forest track to the cabane de l'Escalette. From there you have simply breath-taking views of the le Mourtis ski resort and the high mountains that border Spain including the highest peak in the Pyrenees, Pic Aneto 3404m alt. Either precede or follow your walk with lunch at the excellent little restaurant at the col which services delicious food using local products.

Arreau - Saint Aventin

Arreau market - Balnea thermal spa summer experience

Tag 6: Arreau - Saint Aventin

Arreau market
Excursion: On Thursday mornings, the biggest and the best market in the area takes place in the medieval market town of Arreau which is just 15 minutes down the valley from Saint-Lary-Soulan and 40 minutes over the col de Peyresourde from Luchon. You'll discover producers of some of the finest foodstuffs in the area and have the chance to sample their delights. From the huge variety of cheeses to charcuterie produced from locally raised black pigs, from handmade chocolates to the Pyrenean cake speciality 'gateau à la broche', not to mention the freshest seasonal fruit and veg, the market really is a food lovers paradise. While you're there, pop into the shop that makes traditional 'gâteau à la broche' (tree cake) over an open fire, just like farmer's wives have done in farmhouse kitchens for centuries.

Balnea thermal spa summer experience
Excursion: The fabulous family friendly Balnea thermal spa facility in Loudenvielle is in an incredible setting surrounded by the most stunning high mountains. It's 30 minutes from Saint-Lary-Soulan, 15 from the market town of Arreau and 35 minutes from Bagnères-de-Luchon. We'll include a 2h visit to the pools in your package and you can just turn up when you wish. We will advise opening hours in your itinerary.

Peyresourde - Saint Aventin

Meet the huskies - Offroad scooter experience

Tag 7: Peyresourde - Saint Aventin

Meet the huskies
Shared Excursion: Huskies are not just for winter! We're fortunate to have a huskie centre in the central Pyrenees which looks after a pack of nearly 40 dogs. Thierry is passionate about this breed and the dogs are incredibly well looked after. On this huskies experience his team will introduce you to the dogs and tell you all about the breed, their pack behaviour and what their needs are on a day to day basis. After being fitted out with your harness and attaching it to your dog, you'll head out for a 1h walk around the forest tracks and up onto the pastures from where you can enjoy some incredible mountain views. Families with children as young as 6 can enjoy this walk with huskies, but huskie cart (the summer equivalent of the sled) experiences are also available for younger children.

Offroad scooter experience
Shared Excursion: For families with adventure loving kids aged 11+, the offroad scooter, guided by a qualified instructor, is an unmissable summer adventure activity. The scooters have wide (fat) tyres giving them great stability and also have shock absorbers which make for a smoother ride. The small group (max 8 people) take the bubble lift up to the Peyragudes ski resort from where the fun begins as you descend back down to the valley on paths, tracks and short road sections.
