Sossusvlei
An area of rare and astonishing beauty lies hidden in the south of the Namib desert. Red, pink and orange dunes rise high towards the sky, surrounding the bleached white salt pans left by millennia of trickling water. This area is known as Sossusvlei. Two different languages have given rise to the name Sossusvlei, which joins the Nama word ‘sossus’ (meaning dead end) with the Afrikaans word ‘vlei’ (marsh). So the name is literal, as Sossusvlei can fairly accurately be described as a dead end marsh, as the path of the seasonal river is blocked here by the dunes. It is rare today for the waters of the Tsauchab river to reach this far into the desert, but when the rains are exceptional the salt pans are filled and the landscape is even more beautiful. Sossusvlei is one of namibia’s iconic sights, beloved of photographers for the mesmerising colours that accompany dawn and dusk, and beloved of anyone who enjoys the beauty of the wilderness. The famous dead acacia trees of Deadvlei make a really striking image with the salt white pan, the red dunes, the blue sky and the black silhouettes of the skeleton trees.
