The Himba people
It is a historic tradition for Himba women to abstain from washing with water. There was an extended period of drought in the past during which there wasn’t enough water to go round, and only men were allowed to wash in what little water there was. This rule endured and it has now become the norm, so for hygiene purposes they take ‘smoke baths.’ A small amount of aromatic wood or herbs are added to some smouldering charcoal which the women will bring near to themselves. The smoke and heat have antiseptic properties and cleanse the skin by causing perspiration. This tradition of not washing might sound really tough but there isn’t a huge amount of water most of the year for the Himba anyway, and the women are used to applying the ochre to their skin which is believed to help prevent odours and infection. Occasionally the women wrap themselves loosely in a cloth and allow the smoke to cover their body entirely, akin to a full body wash.
