Desert elephants
Although it is not a separate species from the standard African bush elephant, the desert dwelling elephant has several adaptations which make it more suited to desert habitats. Firstly their feet tend to be wider, their legs a little longer and their bodies relatively small, all of which must have some advantage for desert life. These elephants can only be found in the deserts of Namibia and Mali, usually in the vicinity of seasonal rivers, where food tends to be more plentiful. Some families stay near the Hoarusib River valley at all times, some groups remain permanently near the Hoanib river, while other families travel between the two. In Namibia the main area populated with elephants is in the northwestern Kunene region. In the rainy season the desert elephants eat buds and fresh shoots, in the dry season they have to make do with drought resistant plants and trees. They seem to enjoy myrrh plants as they will travel out of their way to reach them when fresh shoots are not available.
