Combine mountains and the Mediterranean on this walking holiday in Greece: explore picturesque Zagorian villages, traverse Vikos gorge and submerge yourself in the turquoise waters of Lefkada! In the North Pindus Mountains in the historic area of Epirus, you’ll find Zagori which in Slavic means “beyond the mountains”. Perched on the mountain slopes of Epirus, 46 stone villages invite you to explore their mysteries. ‘Zagorohoria’ are considered to be the most beautiful and well-preserved villages of Greece. They are not only great examples of traditional stone architecture, but of a still living tradition, full of myths, customs and cultural expressions of a culture nearing extinction; the culture of the mountainous populations of Greece. As you wander around the picturesque Zagorian villages and Vikos gorge for five days, the deep gorges, ravines, streams and flowing rivers, stone paved paths, steps and bridges, challenging mountain trails will definitely captivate you! Continue your walking adventure along the west coast of Greece and the Ionian island of Lefkada, one of the prettiest and more authentic of the seven Ionian Islands. Lefkada, Ulysses homeland, is a precious green stone in the turquoise blue waters of the Ionian Sea, an island of contrasts characterised by rugged mountains and lush green valleys. If you are a nature lover, Lefkada’s mountains, waterfalls, ravines, natural springs, gorges, lagoon, forests, lush vegetation and rare wild flowers, old network of footpaths and cobblestone donkey tracks as well as its stunning beaches with crystal clear waters will enchant you. The carefully chosen hikes during our Zagori, Vikos gorge & Lefkada walking holiday are graded as easy to moderate. We will walk mainly on paths of moderate gradient with ascents of up to 500m in a day. A typical walk would be around 3 hours long (between 9 and 10km) but we would make it in 5-6 hours including stops at places of interest, lunch or rest. The length of the walks vary and also depend on our guests. There are options and possibilities to stop or continue if one wishes. The whole idea is to combine walking, with exploring the nature and culture of places we visit. We organise this walking holiday from May till the end of September. The summer months are the best time to cross Vikos gorge. You can join a group guided holiday or we can organise a holiday privately, just for your friends and family. Please note lunches & dinners are at an additional cost.

The most popular areas of Greece are likely to be very busy during the peak summer season months of July and August, while some of the lesser known destinations may be at their festive best at this time and a bit too quiet and inaccessible outside the height of summer. Bear in mind that the high summer brings with it some scorching temperatures, and 40°C is not uncommon at the hottest part of the day. If the heat and the crowds don’t appeal, aim instead for the shoulder seasons. April to June and September to October are great times to plan your bespoke holiday in Greece, and the southern islands in particular can offer plentiful blue skies and warm sun at both ends of this range. Spring (April, May) is a beautiful season to explore with wildflowers in abundance, though the sea can be chilly. Warmer water temperatures await in autumn (September, October) and this is also a good time for local festivals. Winter is a good time for sightseeing on the mainland providing you are not put off by showers, but with strong winds, closed facilities and skeleton services on ferries it can be a tricky time to visit all but the most populous Greek islands.
