You won’t have to wander far through the streets of Chefchaouen to see how it gained its nickname - ‘The Blue Pearl.’ Many of the dwellings, steps, walls and doors of this mountain town are painted in various tones of Moroccan blue. Achingly photogenic, Chefchaouen’s blue-washed buildings are accessorised with splashes of colour from the many artisan craft shops scattered throughout the town. The lofty location in the Rif mountains tucked into the northwest corner of Morocco have meant that until recently, tourists had bypassed the town, but as word (and pictures) of the stunning ‘blue pearl’ spread, this relatively small mountain town gained popularity. The historical origins for the blue washed exteriors in Chefchaouen are not entirely clear: one theory insists that the blue paint is applied as a deterrent for mosquitoes; and another claims that Jews fleeing Hitler began the tradition, choosing blue to represent the purity of heaven and the skies, as a visual prompt to live a faithful life.
