Explore the lesser visited south of Morocco and get to know rural culture with this 10 day tour. It offers a chance to see little explored towns in the Souss Valley south of the High Atlas. Unchanged for hundreds of years, these towns used to be main places on the Trans Saharan caravan routes, and Tarouddant was the Capital of Morocco for a while before other Berber dynasties came and went. Matched with a drive over the High Atlas with amazing views and a glimpse of the Atlantic coast, this itinerary is a great mixture of Berber history and landscape.

You’d be hard pushed to spend time in Morocco without picking up a few souvenirs along the way. This country is a shopper’s delight, with souks and medinas in many major towns and cities. Displays are a local art form and the tempting arrays of homewares, spices and accessories can be hard to resist. Some of the classic goods on sale include all shapes and sizes of Moroccan flat weave rugs, each featuring different geometric patterns in warm colours. Rugs of Berber origin tend to be pale with dark brown diamond patterns, while those woven in the Atlas Mountains tend to feature more zigzags. Pendant lamps with motifs punched into the metal or featuring colourful glass insets are another typical Moroccan handicraft, and the displays of these are particularly dazzling. For something smaller and lighter, consider a selection of spices or an embroidered silk scarf. Argan oil is a prized product of Morocco and is widely available in most areas of the country. If your purchases outstrip your baggage allowance, large shops can send your goods home, or there are shipping companies in the major cities who can arrange for your purchases to be sent on.
