Buddhism in Myanmar
Almost 90% of the population of Myanmar are Buddhist, primarily following the Theravada branch of the religion. Myanmar has been judged to be the most Buddhist nation anywhere when consideration is given to the proportion of total family income that is spent on religious pursuits, and also the number of monks as a proportion of the total population. For many Burmese Buddhists, merit making is the bread and butter of their religious observance. Acts of charity or general good deeds bestow merit, and the more merit gathered in a lifetime adds up to a positive rebirth for the next life. Most Buddhist homes in Myanmar will have a little shrine, which could simply be an ornamental shelf, displaying a Buddha - often seated on an ornamental throne - with a few flowers, maybe some fruit, and a candle or two. There are many festivals related to Buddhism in Myanmar, notably Thingyan water festival, which falls in April, Vesak full moon festival, and many pagoda festivals which are held on various dates throughout the year, usually on the full moon.
