One Perfect Day In Hong Kong

|

Hong Kong is one of the most exciting cities in the world, buzzing with energy and teeming with life. A visit here will be memorable for its intensity of sights, smells, sounds and tastes. With so much to see it can be hard to decide where to start, so we’ve put together our perfect Hong Kong day. For those on a super-short stopover you can follow this itinerary exactly. Spread it out over a few days if you have time.

Start the day with an early morning Tai Chi workout overlooking the iconic Hong Kong skyline – surely one of the most impressive in the world. These are held Monday, Wednesday and Friday mornings for free, and are bookable via the Hong Kong tourist board.

Star Ferry

After you’ve woken your body take a ride on the legendary Star Ferry. These ancient boats ply the waters between Hong Kong Island and the mainland. Our favourite route is between Kowloon and the island, but any of the routes will give you great views. Once on the island, take a trip on the Peak Tram. In commercial operation since 1888 this venerable Hong Kong institution winds its way up to Victoria Peak, Hong Kong’s highest. Have a drink or bite of lunch whilst taking in the views; you could also consider taking a walk on one of the nature trails.

Visit the markets

In the afternoon, explore some of Hong Kong’s legendary markets. Hollywood Road, on the island, is famous for its antique market, but our favourite is the Yuen Po Street bird market where wizened old men feed their pets with chopsticks and dote like grandmothers on their charges. Try and visit one of Hong Kong’s food markets as well – there are numerous dotted all over the place. The ‘wet’ areas, selling live fish, are particularly memorable.

In the evening find a bar with good views in time for the nightly laser show which begins at 8pm. One of our favourites is Aqua Spirit at No 1 Peking Road. For food there are plenty of fancy options (try the Philippe Starck designed Felix in the Peninsula hotel), but we would recommend the local restaurants you’ll find in the Lan Kwai Fong area. Finish the day by visiting the Ladies or Gentleman’s night markets or, if all that walking has tired you out, think about having a foot massage – there are good value places all over Hong Kong.
