How To Plan Your India Trip

|

Whichever country you’re planning to visit, there always seems to be too much to see, and too little time. Nowhere is that more the case than in India. As well as its sheer size – it’s not known as the subcontinent for nothing – India has an extraordinary range of cultures, histories and activities. The oft repeated advice to not try and do too much in the time you have has never been more apt.

Our key piece of advice when planning a trip to India is to focus in on one region/area of the country – don’t try and rush round everywhere. If you want to see the Golden Triangle, then fine – but consider spending some time in between the key towns and cities to see some of the countryside. If you want to see some of the north as well as the south – allow at least three weeks.

Jaipur in IndiaThe ‘big ticket’ sites in India such as the Taj Mahal, Delhi, Jaipur, and seeing tigers, are all incredible. In many ways, though, it is the bits in between that make India the compelling destination that it is – the countryside markets and the crumbling palaces where the local Maharaja and his family still live – and above all the people who, away from the sites are some of the most friendly, genuine, not to mention entrepreneurial, people you could hope to meet. Here’s some suggested destinations to fit the time you have:

10 days or less: Consider waiting until you can spend more time. Otherwise, head for the Golden Triangle. If you enjoy walking, you could also think about the Himalayas.

10 – 14 days: This is a good amount of time to focus on one region. Consider Rajasthan – a beautiful and varied part of the country. You could also consider focusing on the Himalayan region or the more laid back south (Kerala).
